Dr. Maya Lujan, PhD

Psychologist
124 Howard St, Petaluma, CA
I am a Clinical Psychologist with a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Palo Alto University and a Bachelor's degree from San Jose State University. I have previous training in the treatment of adolescents and adults, with experience working in community mental health, juvenile justice, and private practice. I work with both adults and adolescents, drawing from theories such as Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioral Theory to ensure I meet the specific needs of my clients effectively. My therapeutic style is casual and conversational, aiming to provide a positive experience and create a space where clients feel safe to discuss topics openly and without judgment. I recognize that initiating therapy can sometimes feel daunting, and I have found that this approach helps decrease anxiety related to engaging in therapy. I believe that one size does not fit all. We are the experts of our own experience, and our individual experiences shape who we are. A strong therapeutic relationship is the foundation for positive change. I foster authenticity and compassion both within the client's view of themselves and within the therapeutic relationship. Therapy is a collaboration aimed at improving overall well-being, and my goal is to guide clients on their journey to living their best life. These values guide my clinical work to ensure that each person experiences a therapeutic framework that is individually tailored and feels right for them.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I truly believe that the therapeutic relationship is of utmost importance and strive to build a meaningful and strong connection. I often use humor to help increase a sense of normalcy and ease within the sessions. I want you to feel that you are talking to a real person who understands what you may be struggling with, and to create a safe space where you can speak freely.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During our first session, I will gather background information and work with you to identify your goals for therapy. While I utilize these goals to frame our therapy sessions, I encourage you to bring any other issues that are top of mind to our sessions. This is your time and I believe that in order to get the most out of therapy, it is helpful to discuss issues that feel the most important in that moment, as well as ongoing themes. I tend to use open ended questions to help you further explore your values and how to find meaning in your own life.
