Dr. Alberts was a highly recruited student athlete. She received a full ride to the University of Missouri St. Louis for basketball and softball and was accepted into their 3+4 program for Optometry school through their Pierre Laclede Honors College. She completed undergraduate studies in 3 years and was named the prestigious “Chemistry Student of the Year” for the entire UMSL campus her third year. She continued to be a scholarship athlete for the basketball team while completing her first year of Optometry school. She is the only person to have ever done this in the school’s history, and no one has ever done it since. Dr. Alberts graduated from Optometry school in 2010 and was asked to be the inaugural resident at the Marion Illinois Veterans Administration hospital. She helped the Marion VA earn their residency credentials and completed her residency in 2011. She then completed her Fellowship from the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO) in 2012. She then became a peer reviewed published author with her submission of “Retinoschisis: A teaching case report and literature review” to the Journal of Optometric Education. She continued to strive to be the best Optometrist for her patients and passed the Advanced Competency in Medical Optometry (ACMO) exam, became a Certified Diabetic teleretinal reader, and loved her role as Adjunct Faculty with Indiana University School of Optometry. Furthermore, she was an expert witness in a felony DUI case where she successfully defended that monovision contact lenses are not only visually inferior, but dangerous in the 3-dimensional world we live in. Most recently, she completed her laser certification and lesion removal credentials, keeping her up to date with full scope Optometry. Dr. Alberts’ passions include full scope medical optometry such as red eyes, macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, and dry eyes.
