Getting to know Dr. Michael Sun

Dr. Michael Sun is a licensed clinical psychologist in the New Hampshire Upper Valley. Believing strongly in the power of a therapeutic relationship, Dr. Sun embraces a collaborative approach in evidence-based assessments and therapies. With a rich background in studying brain images, he appreciates the deep insights hidden in emotions and advocates for authenticity, helping clients unlock their mind’s potential. He aims to align an individual’s past and values with their present challenges through a non-judgmental, empathic approach. His therapeutic methods are anchored in mindfulness, values-based decision-making, and practical techniques like cognitive-behavioral and exposure-based therapies. Dr. Sun guides clients to understand their relationships with themselves, others, and their situations, uncovering often overlooked aspects of their difficulties. As a bicultural person of color, he uniquely combines a multicultural perspective with an individual-focused approach, enriching his clients’ understanding of their experiences. His goal is to foster awareness and comprehension of thought, emotion, behavioral, and relationship patterns, empowering clients to optimize their behavior and decision-making. Dr. Sun also incorporates technologies like virtual reality and brain imaging when beneficial.

What should a new client know about working with you?

A new client should know that working with me is a collaborative and thoughtful process grounded in empathy, curiosity, and respect. I place great value on the therapeutic relationship and strive to create a nonjudgmental space where clients feel safe to be authentic and explore their inner experiences. I believe emotions carry important information, and together we work to understand what your thoughts and feelings may be revealing about your needs, values, and goals. I use evidence-based assessments and therapies while remaining flexible and responsive to each individual’s background and experiences. As a bicultural person of color, I bring a multicultural perspective to my work and am attentive to how culture, identity, and lived experiences shape the way people understand themselves and their challenges. Therapy with me focuses on increasing awareness, aligning your values with your current challenges, and empowering you to make choices that support long-term well-being.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with building a strong therapeutic relationship and developing a comprehensive understanding of your concerns, history, and goals. We collaboratively explore how your past experiences, values, and current circumstances intersect, using evidence-based assessments when helpful to clarify patterns and areas of focus. I integrate mindfulness, values-based decision-making, and practical interventions such as cognitive-behavioral and exposure-based therapies to address specific challenges. Throughout therapy, we examine patterns in thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships to uncover aspects that may not be immediately obvious. When appropriate, I may also incorporate innovative tools such as virtual reality or insights from brain imaging to enhance understanding and treatment. The goal of therapy is to help you develop greater awareness and clarity, strengthen decision-making, and feel more empowered to navigate challenges with confidence and intention, both during therapy and beyond.
