Psychologist
3743 Latrobe Dr, Charlotte, NC
Hello, I am Emily Soukhanouvong (pronounced “Sue-kon-no-vong”!). A little about why you're here: You learned that to get through life, you must be perfect, “proper,” and stay invisible. But operating down this path comes at a cost: overwhelming pressure, self-hatred, and feeling like an imposter in your own skin. Belonging has never been easy for me, especially as a child of Asian immigrant parents. The pressure to be "enough" for others or to offset the guilt I felt for all the sacrifices my parents made to succeed in the United States has contributed to my resilience and anxious attempts to hide my imperfections. So, this is an invitation to those who want permission to mess up, be imperfect, and recover from unmet needs. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Regent University and hold a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I completed a fellowship in Comprehensive DBT and ERP at Potomac Behavioral Solutions, which deepened my passion for Dialectical Behavior Therapy. As a passionate DBT-er, I navigate therapy through the balance of acceptance and change (you will most likely catch me saying “both/and” rather than “either/or” in session). I am here to create a safe space with validation and nonjudgment while helping you make effective changes that work for you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

This is the space to address who you are, where you fit in, or why you remain trapped in actions that add personal suffering. Let’s balance working through your needs with evidence-based approaches and authentic human connection. You get to decide what to build, rebuild, and embrace how to fully exist in your life. This process is hard, and it's possible. Because you are not alone in this, we will help you engage in life by incorporating skills blended with lightheartedness and openness to ask hard, awkward, and taboo questions. We'll primarily apply dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and radically open dialectical behavioral therapy (RO-DBT) for you to learn and grow in this chapter of your life. A typical session is 50 minutes long in person or via telehealth (in 40+ states). Of note, I can NOT offer medication prescriptions and I do not offer psychological testing at this time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My work with individuals usually combines cultural sensitivity care by ensuring I do not assume to know everything about your history, experience, and personal beliefs.
