Peter Britton, LP

Psychologist
NY
Every time I have gone through a rough patch or faced a critical life decision and not known what to do, I have been lucky enough to meet someone who said the right thing at the right time. Successful therapy requires a helping relationship that brings out the best in you. I aspire to listen to you, be understanding, non-judgmental, caring, genuine, and reliable. People are experts in themselves, able to overcome innumerable challenges. I have learned that it is critical to recognize individuals’ strengths and abilities, and help them consider how they can be applied to their current dilemmas. When people are uncertain about next steps, I help them explore their confusion, and resolve it in the way that is most consistent with their values, beliefs, and well-being. Sometimes, however, people are faced with challenges that require expertise that they do not have. In such situations, my responsibility is to bring you the skills and strategies that people find most helpful, and tailor them to your needs and preferences to discover what works for you. My approach is humanistic and I often rely on motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions. If you are facing a critical life decision, struggling with depression and/or anxiety, experiencing conflict in an important relationship, considering changing potentially hazardous substance use patterns, scared or angry about something or someone, or simply thinking about making a change, feel free to contact me so that we can set up a brief meeting to see if I am the right therapist for you.
