About Dr. Peter McCann
Peter D. McCann, M.D. specializes in shoulder and elbow conditions and has practiced orthopedic surgery for over 30 years. He is Director of Orthopedic Surgery and Director of Orthopedic Strategic Initiatives at Lenox Health Greenwich Village and Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
Dr. McCann earned his Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University. He completed residency training at Saint Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital / Columbia University Medical Center, where he also completed a fellowship. He is board certified and trained under Charles S. Neer II, MD, widely considered the father of modern shoulder surgery.
He is a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the premier international society dedicated to shoulder and elbow treatment, and Emeritus Editor in Chief of The American Journal of Orthopedic Surgery. He is also a member of the American Orthopedic Association, the oldest organization dedicated to leadership and education in orthopedic surgery, and has over 200 presentations and papers.
Dr. McCann has been cited as a high-quality physician in the annual New York Magazine Best Doctors list for many years and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation in 2011.
His childhood interest in sports made orthopedic surgery a natural fit. As a former competitive swimmer, Jones Beach lifeguard, lacrosse and tennis player, he understands athletes' needs to stay fit and heal when injured. As a pianist, guitarist, and organist, he also appreciates the physical demands musicians place on the upper extremity. Dr. McCann prioritizes providing comprehensive and personalized service to his patients.

The doctor examined my arm and conducted a short test. It was the first time I had ever been to a doctor in this field, so I was a little worried about whether I would understand everything in English. I never have had a good experience with the doctors on the Best Doctors lists and he is no different. I feel many spend more time campaigning for those honors rather than focusing on being attentive to pt concerns.
Brusque manner, didn’t seem too interested in listening. It’s like he predetermined my diagnosis before he talked to me. Felt like he was going through the motions. Aloof and impatient with questions.
