Dr. Phillip Van, MD

Psychiatrist
MI
Dr. Phillip Van is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist who provides compassionate, individualized care grounded in curiosity, collaboration, and a genuine desire to understand the whole person. He strives to create a comfortable, nonjudgmental environment where clients feel free to be themselves and speak openly about their experiences. Dr. Van grew up in a multicultural household where education, healthcare, community, and helping others were deeply valued. He studied Biochemistry with a Medical Emphasis at the University of California, Riverside before earning his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatry residency at Authority Health and advanced training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, along with training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis through the Washington-Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Van was drawn to psychiatry because of the opportunity to understand people beyond a diagnosis. He considers the experiences, relationships, strengths, environment, and goals that make each person unique. His individualized, evidence-based approach incorporates CBT while also exploring how development, family dynamics, relationships, and past experiences can influence how someone thinks, feels, and interacts with the world today. Dr. Van recognizes that asking for help can be difficult and believes clients shouldn't have to wait until life becomes overwhelming to seek support. Whether someone is struggling to understand what they're feeling, feeling overwhelmed, or simply feeling stuck, his goal is to meet them where they are and work collaboratively toward meaningful growth. Outside of work, Dr. Van enjoys spending time with his family and their dog, exploring new restaurants and foods, traveling, spending time in nature, and practicing origami.
