Getting to know Dr. Rachel Larrain Montoni

*This practice is an out-of-network provider and provides Superbills to submit to insurance for reimbursement via out-of-network benefits.* Being human is hard. You're frustrated or unfulfilled in your relationships, having trouble coping with negative thoughts and feelings, or feeling disconnected from yourself or your goals. While outwardly you may look like you have it all together, internally, you feel isolated, stuck, or insecure. You're often second-guessing, blaming, or criticizing yourself. Being a perfectionist is exhausting, and you feel like nothing you do is ever good enough. You struggle with saying no or worry about disappointing others. You can't get out of your own head, and you feel weighed down by guilt or shame. You feel alone. Deep down, you know you want to "have it all together" on the inside as well as the outside. Imagine a world in which you feel grounded and sure of yourself—a world where you feel you're exactly where you're meant to be: out of your head and living your best life fully and unapologetically. I am here to be human with you and to help you set yourself free. I provide specialized tools to help you understand the roots of your struggles so that together we can create meaningful change and growth. I integrate trauma-informed care with warmth and humor, and a gift for compassionately calling you on your BS. I prioritize establishing a trusting, non-judgmental relationship. I can't wait to connect with you. I earned my Ph.D. in School Psychology from Fordham University in 2016 and hold a Bachelor's degree from the University of Delaware. Faculty Appointments: Assistant Professor of Psychology, Columbia University Medical Center, 2017–2021

What should a new client know about working with you?

The care I provide is rooted in building a secure relationship with you and establishing an environment of trust and safety. I approach our work together with empathy and curiosity as I help you to build strength and self-trust. Those who know me favor my warmth and humor, and my ambition to show up genuinely and non-judgmentally no matter the circumstance. My therapeutic style is collaborative, compassionate, and balanced to both meet you where you are, while challenging you to introspect, grow, and work toward your goals.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am a New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center-trained psychologist with advanced training in various evidence-based modalities. My therapeutic orientation is integrative, as I employ a combination of interventions based on your unique needs and goals. Much of my work is guided by an attachment-based framework. I am here to help you better understand yourself, connect with your emotions and experiences, and develop meaningful relationships with yourself and others.
