“Dr. Kaiser is wonderful! He identifies specific goals and a timeline for therapy, and gives you a clear idea of what to expect. He is responsive to concerns both in person and via email as he is able. He helped me navigate a very difficult change in my life and it felt like he was by my side at every step. I am doing so much better as a result. I am astonished to have made such great progress in a very fast period. If you are looking for someone to help you learn about yourself and make necessary changes fairly quickly, he is amazing! ”

Getting to know Dr. Ronald S. Kaiser

Ron Kaiser, Ph.D., is a positive health psychologist, coach, author, podcaster, educator, consultant, and speaker. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, following a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Counseling from the University of Minnesota. With more than five decades of experience, including 25 years as Director of Psychology at the renowned Jefferson Headache Center at Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Kaiser is an innovative thought leader in his field. He has developed the concepts of THE MENTAL HEALTH GYM, GOAL-ACHIEVING PSYCHOTHERAPY (GAP), THE TYPE P PERSONALITY, and REJUVENAGING®. His positive, goal-oriented approach has helped thousands overcome medical, psychological, and self-imposed limitations to become better versions of themselves by embracing The Mental Health Gym's philosophy and practices. Dr. Kaiser's ideas and methods are detailed in his books: WHAT CAN GO RIGHT? The Thinking Person's Guide to Making Good Things Happen, THE MENTAL HEALTH GYM PLAYBOOK, and most recently, REJUVENAGING®: The Art and Science of Growing Older with Enthusiasm. In recent years, Dr. Kaiser has focused on REJUVENAGING® to empower those in life's second half-century to lead balanced, engaged, and physically and mentally healthy lifestyles. He is passionate about promoting older adulthood as a time of growth rather than decline and is recognized nationally and internationally for his webinars, courses, and presentations. Dr. Kaiser lives in Philadelphia, and his proudest accomplishments are the relationships he shares with Libby, his wife of over 50 years, and their children and grandchildren.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a positive psychologist and my emphasis is on overall wellness. I'm not just about resolving problems but helping my patients take the next step toward being in touch with their awesomeness and becoming the best versions of themselves. I have worked with thousands of individuals over the years to help them overcome problems of living and function with improved physical, social, and cognitive health as well as improved mental health. I care about how you take care of your body and your relationships as well as your mind. While my approach is applicable to adults of all ages, I am particularly interested in helping adults in life's 2nd half-century, thus dealing with headache, and those whose mental health has been impacted by Covid-19 to achieve a more active and positive lifestyle. My approach is an active one that includes homework and challenges to how you lead your life. You don't need a therapist for wallowing; you need one for personal growth. As you meet your goals, you will become less dependent upon using therapy as a way of life, and the goal should be to transition out of it as you become a Type P Personality (which is a concept that I developed): Personal Goal-Driven; Proactive; Positive: Passionate; Persistent; and Playful.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The process typically begins with your personal mission statement and your vision and goals for the future. We then pursue the process of making things happen by taking small steps at a time. I use cognitive-behavioral and positive psychology techniques (some of which I developed) to guide you to appreciate your awesomeness and the progress you are making. Sessions are built around your goals in the health and fitness, intellectual functioning, social connectedness and emotional functioning areas, while constantly working on a positive self-image and the management of lifestyle to reduce the potential for stress. While my approach is somewhat structured, the goals are individualized. Since your situation is unique, the therapy process will be uniquely tailored to you.
