Qualifications and Experience
Dr. Castillo practices compassionate care, provides individual attention, listens carefully and takes all the time his patients need during a visit. He sees each patient as a person who is composed of body, mind and soul. His emphasis is on quality care. He believes that the care of patients should be a holistic approach with respect to the patient’s dignity. Dr. Castillo is available same day to treat acute cases and arrange for next day procedures. He also provides outpatient consultations on-site almost daily. At this time we are only able to take insurances that do not need a referral, such as PPOs, through ZocDoc. If you have a managed medical plan, please call the office for an appointment.

They're very polite and the waiting time was really short, I highly recommend this office.
Excelente, me senti muy comoda y protegida.
Very personable and patient - he answered all of my questions and didn't make me feel rushed in the least.
Very friendly staff and doctor.
I enjoyed meeting Dr. Castillo and I thought he was excellent. In fact, since I knew I had a stomach issue I wish I'd gone to him right away. Why is the meeting with primary care necessary? This process is too drawn out.
Very friendly overall, took his time during our appointment, which reassured me that he cared about helping me and didn't just see me as a source of income. He gave a helpful explanation of his diagnosis and what I should do to treat my acid reflux.
My initial results from my procedure showed that there was something causing my distress and pain but then the results came back and all the doctor wrote was "negative." There was no explanation about why my initial results supported my pain and discomfort, so I am still in pain and discomfort without any explanation. In addition, it took over a month to get my results. The doctor told me to call back in 2 weeks and then they said they'd call me. In the mean time, I am in pain this whole time without any explanation. Finally at a month I got fed up and called and they magically had my results ready but with limited explanation. In addition, when I woke up from my procedure, the doctor was already holding his coat ready to leave which made me feel really uncomfortable. I had to wait 5 hours for my procedure and was patient, so it made me feel uncomfortable that he made me feel rushed with questions after my procedure.
I had a really good visit with Dr. Castillo. He was very thorough, spent plenty of time answering my questions, and I enjoyed his demeanor. I would definitely recommend seeing him.
He listened to everything I had to say and helped me make good choices based on my medical history.
Great doctor! Very friendly and listens to all your questions to help determine the right path for you.
He's a fantastic Gastroenterologist: professional and tries to be considerate if you mention a tight budget for RX when prescribing. Open to questions and great at informing about risks/options and treatment plans. I've had 4 outpatient procedures that were exactly as planned. I did put 4 star right away about "wait time" if he's in the office all goes as planned. He is a specialist and like all, he can get caught up in the hospital delays. I see this as a sign of a good MD as he prioritizes safe hospital procedures & emergencies with vulnerable patients.
Noon Appointment at 1:30! NO explanations
My visit was great, from time of arrival to the time I went home. I like Dr. Castillo very friendly and he answered all my questions. I feel stress free after visiting Dr. Castillo. Thanks
Long time of waiting (come earlier 30minutes), but everything else was perfect!
Glad I made the appointment. Very knowledgeable. I am already feeling better with the prescription he gave me.
Dr. Castillo was the first doctor in years who took my problems seriously and who also took the time to explain things and answer my questions without making me feel silly or rushed. He also provided intelligent and well-communicated reasons for his thoughts and ideas, which I appreciate.
Wonderful doctor -- took the time to explain what he thought about any potential issues.
Always pleasant!!!!! Highly recommended.
Dr. Castillo was great during our appointment. He was very thorough, and offered a lot of insight about my lower abdominal pain. He is extremely nice, and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a gastro in the Chicagoland area
Que es bueno
I saw Dr Castillo with some genuine concerns for my health and was surprised when he didn't even examine me (palpitate stomach or otherwise) based on my complaints. He gave me a generic answers, wrote off some prescription and sent me on my way. No further tests or treatment. I felt uncared for. However his secretaries are VERY nice and kind.
The whole staff was very professional and explained everything very well. I am so happy that I made an appointment with Dr. Castillo !
Dr. Castillo was amicable enough but did not seem very genuine but his office staff were great. My issues with him are not so much personality (I can handle that) and why I would not refer him to others is due to certain things he said that could be taken offensively. Also, in asking how I could change my lifestyle in order to get better, his response was I may have to take pills for the rest of my life. Maybe some people are ok with this but I am not. I would rather figure out what is causing the issue and change things so medication is not a reliance, especially considering I am relatively young.
I chose Dr. Castillo for 2 reasons: he has strong ZocDoc ratings & feedback, and his hours are pretty convenient (after 4PM) for working professionals. Upon arrival, I appreciated that he is located at and affiliated with St. Marys Hospital. The facility is not modern and does not have current technology, however there is parking on-site which makes it a somewhat convenient destination (traffic notwithstanding). The receptionist area is filled to the gills with files; you have to appreciate the pleasant employees who endure such a tight space and long lines. The nurses called me back within 5 minutes and asked a lot of questions, some duplicative of the new patient forms filled on ZocDoc. I described my symptoms and they left to let Dr. Castillo know I was ready. About 10 minutes later, he enters the room, has me sit in the chair rather than the patient table, asked me to describe my symptoms, and then gave a quick, assumptive diagnosis solely based on my description. Dr. Castillo said that surgery was the only option if his diagnosis was correct. I then sat on the table, he pressed my belly, there was no pain or sensitivity, then gave his reco and left. It took all of 5 minutes. Needless to say that while I appreciated the speed, I would have preferred a more thoughtful and thorough discussion as I've never had gastro problems nor am I familiar with the surgery or procedures he recommended. I was disappointed that I had to go home to look up what these entailed rather than him taking the time to walk me through these. [To contrast, my primary care physician checked me for the same thing and spent 45 minutes with me, pulling up pictures on the computer to walk me through how the systems work and what the procedures were.] I might continue with Dr. Castillo, I might not. I'm not sure. However I find myself regretting making an eleventh hour gastroenterology appointment on ZocDoc rather than going through my PCP first. Dr. Castillo wasn't a bad physician -- let me be clear. But for a patient like me who needs explanations and descriptions rather than quick observations, this didn't meet all of my needs.
Dr. Castillo simplified the issue in a way that it made it easy to understand why the issue occurred in the first place.
He was very dismissive of my pains and concerns. He actually didn't even give me a full exam - he just asked me some questions, wrote three scripts, and sent me on my way. Very discouraging and frustrating.
I thought Dr. Castillo did a great job listening to my concerns. He made some medical suggestions and while I am not certain I will go in that direction, I appreciate his insight.
He was very informative, explained everything to me clearly ! I will be going back!
Great doctor, very comforting and willing to answer any and all questions I had. I was very nervous on the day of my procedure but Dr. Castillo and his nurses had a great attitude the entire time, which gave me a great sense of comfort.
He is very calm and composed. He spends adequate time with each patient, makes sure he listens to them with empathy and care. He put me at ease the moment he started talking. Great Doc !!
Very direct, helpful and pleasant!!
He is THE BEST doctor i ever visited...he is so sweet and friendly and accurate in the diagnosis....very knowledgeable and took time to listen to my version...i felt comfortable talking to this doctor and he was so patient to answer all my queries He even helped me with an instant savings card for my prescription drug and that really saved lot of bucks :-) i would highly recommend this doctor.
During my consultation, he was too inattentive and dismissive for what I needed. If you want someone to tell you what you need to do and don't want to be as active in your care, I think he'd do pretty well judging by the rest of the reviews and his training.
This doctor is a great listener and professional. He explained things were you understood it.
Dr. Sam was very knowledgeable and had a great approach to Crohn's disease. After seeing many specialists over the years, Dr. Sam was the only specialist to explain the pro's and con's to several treatment options that have been published. He laid out a plan to get myself better and feel very comfortable with his treatment plan. The office staff is super nice and I did not wait at all. I look forward to working with Dr. Sam.
Dr. Castillo MD listened to my problems and he also referenced research studies and studies that he has conducted that really assured me that he is an expert in his profession.
Dr. Castillo was very thorough and took ample time to answer my questions and address my concerns. Unlike many doctors I have been to, Dr. Castillo did not push medications as the first option to treat my condition. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a personable and knowledgeable physician.
Dr. Castillo was such a good listener and took his time to thoroughly explain everything to me. It was obvious that he cared about helping me; I've never felt so reassured by a doctor!
The visit to Dr. Castillo's was one of the best I've had. The office called me two days earlier to ask me to push my appt by 15 minutes. It's one of the few places that is respectful about a patient's time. I was ushered in right away. Dr. Castillo also took his time to listen to me instead of imposing his diagnosis. I didn't feel rushed and his final recommendation took into consideration the whole picture. He's very smart and his charisma and bedside manner made me feel that I was in good hands. He is what ideal doctor's should be like. After a long time, I finally felt that a doctor listened to me. Thank you, Dr. Castillo!
Let me tell you--My husband is not one to "like Docs" because they are so "automatic and no-personable" BUT--This Dr. won our hearts, especially my husband--He is impressed and in awe as to how relaxed and informative he was!!! My husband says " I am just amazed as to how HE made me feel so relieved after hearing bad news about my condition". He reassured me that things were going to be all right as long as I followed a healthier life". Dr. Castilo just sat across from and spoke to me unhurriedly like I was the only patient there--No looking as his watch no ok that's all and leave...He sat there and he even would pause as he gave me information and instructions..Great eye contact--great personality--great everything!!! I can't get over it my husband said as we left--He says.." I never had a Doctor that took the time to really care !!-" Love him!!
Went well. Was helpful.
Great doctor. Truly cares about his patients and listens attentively.
Good doctor, great experience
Very nice, caring, and knowledgable doctor
Dr. Castillo was very friendly, he didn't mind answering any questions.
I went in to see the doctor because of pains in my stomach. He kept asking me questions about how much I work out and made comments about how I have to lose weight. I am not offended by the comment to lose weight because I would like to lose weight (though my BMI is in the healthy range, thank you very much!). But I feel like he spent time more time telling me how I should work out and how I was thinner in my license picture then actually trying to figure out what was wrong with me. And when he repeated my symptoms back to me and I corrected one of them (i had pain in a particular spot, he classified them as "migrating pains"), he waved me off like it wasn't a big deal. Anyway, I wouldn't ever go back to him. Too full of himself to listen and gave erroneous advice (the best exercise to lose weight is NOT swimming!!!!)
He took so much time and attention and really seems to care about his patients.
I thought Dr. Castillo was a wonderful doctor! I tend to try and self diagnose my own medical conditions but came in after I realized my symptoms weren't going away but getting worse. I came in with stomach pain and had to go through the embarrassing task of talking about bowel movements but Dr. Castillo put me at ease. Although, I would have loved to come in and get a prescription / quick fix to my stomach issues, I was impressed by Dr. Castillo's thoroughness in diagnosing the cause. It was my decision in the end to undergo an endoscopy / colonoscopy to make sure my condition indeed was minor versus related to a chronic disease. I appreciated his forethought and would highly recommend Dr. Castillo to others!
It was a great experience.
He was down to earth, non judgmental and very knowledgeable. He does more listening than talking and doesn't rush the appointment AT ALL. He made me feel extremely comfortable and I highly recommend him to anyone.
love going here not long an every thing was well can't wait to go back.
I was having some trouble with food getting stuck on the way down on several occasions - this seemed serious so I thought I should see a gastro doctor ASAP. I went to see Dr. Castillo - he has a good reputation and is Mayo trained so he seemed the best I could find in Chicago with some research. I was nervous about my situation but he put me at ease right away and seemed to spend a lot of time with me asking a lot of good questions. I liked that he took the time to explain to me what was going on in detail and didn't treat me like I wouldn't get it. Overall very respectful and friendly. My situation has cleared up thankfully - I would highly recommend this doctor to anyone.
he was on time help us did not take long can't wait to go back.
Dr. Castillo seemed to know a lot more about nutrition and natural ways to help treat my diagnosis compared to other GI doctors I have seen over the past 5 years. I have researched my problem thoroughly and he seemed very current and more "up to date" with medicine. I also felt like he wasn't rushed when we discussed my problems together. I looked at his resume and saw he has trained at top facilities including Mayo Clinic. I appreciate a doctor who actually seems to know what he is doing.
Very friendly and knowledgeable.
Was looking for a gastroenterologist nearby, found Dr. Castillo. I liked what he had to say in his description and then took a look at his education and was impressed he studied at the Mayo Clinic. I booked an appointment and was able to get one pretty quickly. I went to the office. It was a stand alone facility next to the hospital. I liked that it had free parking and was a quick walk from the lot. The office is on the first floor so you don't have to deal with all the hubub of being in the hospital. Dr. Castillo was super cool, really patient, kind and genuine. I felt like he was working with me, not talking at me and had my best interest at heart. You can tell he loves what he does and really cares about you. A great find.
Dr Castillo has great bedside manner and was very helpful. I highly recommend him!
