Getting to know Dr. Sarah Rizvi

My specialty is working with people who are experiencing chronic anxiety. Perhaps you feel restless when you have a moment to yourself. Or maybe you are constantly feeling fatigued and overwhelmed? Maybe you get so caught up in making things in your professional and personal life perfect that you don't get a chance to enjoy them? If this sounds like you, you do not need to suffer another day. For the last decade I have been working with clients to find what they truly value and help them achieve it. I work with people to help deepen their connections, gain energy, improve their sense of belonging and increase their confidence. I have a PhD in Clinical Psychology and have been practicing for over a decade. I work exclusively with adults and my practice is focused on women. One of my specialities is working with multicultural and diverse populations.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Coming to therapy takes a great deal of courage and I try to honor that courage by being a good listener. In the first few sessions, I like to let you take the lead and tell your story in a way that is meaningful to you. I work from a values based approach, using your values as a compass to guide the session. If it's important to you, it's important to talk about in session.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session is 50 mins, either in my office or online from the comfort of your own home. It can be scary to think about unpacking memories and intense emotions, but I try to set a structure that keeps you feeling safe the entire time. For example, I might teach you some breathing and relaxation skills to help you calm down if you feel overwhelmed. And I always leave the last 5-10 mins of session to help you center yourself so you can return to your responsibilities and not be completely overwhelmed by what we discussed. If appropriate, we might set some goals for you to work on between sessions to keep the momentum going. You might work on practicing boundary setting strategies, communication skills or just identifying thoughts that are causing you stress. When you come back for the next session, we review how those goals went or what stuck with you from last session.
