Getting to know Dr. Scott Lloyd

Dr. Scott Lloyd, PhD in Clinical Psychology from Yeshiva University, is a no-nonsense yet compassionate provider who helps clients use their strengths to overcome their weaknesses. He is most experienced in using third-wave CBT therapies like ACT and DBT to treat anxiety, panic, and phobias, solve interpersonal conflicts, and boost relationship and career satisfaction. Scott is certified in neurotherapy and biofeedback.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I like to get to know a client by figuring out what’s going on with them. In treatment, each week is a combination of challenges and successes that we make sense of and use to move forward. Rather than reinventing the wheel, I try to get a sense of what has been working and what we can improve upon. Sometimes a reading or assignment helps nail a concept down or start a habit, and sometimes a chat is all that’s needed. When talk therapy isn’t enough, I use high-tech advances like biofeedback, neurofeedback, and virtual reality to help clients face their fears and learn to better regulate their minds and bodies. Treatment is complete when the client feels ready for whatever comes their way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Typically I work from a Cognitive & Behavioral framework using specific tools, techniques and principles from ACT and DBT therapies. A first step is often to help the client gain perspective on their experience through reflection and reframing of ideas. Then we can begin to differentiate goals; things you can achieve from values; ongoing processes like maintaining a healthy relationship with a spouse, friend or parent. Another common step is learning about why we have emotions and thoughts so we can begin to separate what we're feeling from what is truly important in the moment. This requires mindfulness and emotion regulation skills but it can make us feel tremendously accomplished when we achieve this aim. Some fears and obsessional thoughts and behaviors might require desensitization with exposure therapy. Other worries may respond better to direct challenging and problem solving. The skill of the therapist is getting the right information about the client's history and preferences and then tailoring one's approach to their unique needs and style. This fosters collaboration and respect which strengthen the alliance between therapist and client.

Terrible. I was notified through the system I would meet with Scott, and instead met with a female counselor. When requesting a refund, they denied me and charged for the full cancellation fee.

I've been seeing him for about 9 months now. I think his kind, funny and actually interested in you as a person, which makes it a huge improvement over a couple of other therapists I saw in the past.
