Dr. Shawna Benson, PsyD

Psychologist
6043 Hudson Rd, Ste 350, Woodbury, MN
I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology in 2003 from Argosy University, Salt Lake City, after completing my bachelor's degree at Hamline University. I supervise providers working with clients in individual and family psychotherapy and conducting psychological testing and assessments for ruling out ADHD, pre-bariatric surgery psychological evaluations, and general psychological testing reports to help clarify mental health diagnoses. I work with adolescents and adults navigating life transitions, mental health challenges, addictions (including dual issues of substance abuse and mental health difficulties), trauma recovery, and relationship struggles. I use evidence-based interventions, primarily cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have been a licensed psychologist since 2005, and I supervise psychology doctoral students and pre-licensed post-doctorate providers at Insights Psychology who are conducting psychotherapy and/or psychological testing and evaluation.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During an intake visit, the clinicians I supervise conduct a comprehensive diagnostic assessment to understand the referral question and gather essential information about the clients and their needs. The next step is collaborative treatment planning, where clients actively participate in shaping their care. I utilize evidence-based therapy techniques and provide guidance to the clinicians I supervise. Clients often begin to notice positive changes early in therapy. Additionally, I closely monitor the need for referrals to other professionals, ensuring clients receive well-rounded services.
