As a double board-certified dermatologist, fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, and Marin County native, Dr. Stefan Lowenstein is honored to step into his new role as owner and CEO of Aesthetic Dermatology and Skin Cancer. He is committed to upholding the legacy of Dr. Jeffrey Binstock’s thriving Mill Valley practice, which has delivered world-class dermatologic care for decades—right in the town where Dr. Lowenstein grew up.
Dr. Lowenstein brings years of experience in private practice dermatology and is board-certified in both dermatology and Mohs surgery through the American Academy of Dermatology. With thousands of successful surgical cases, he is known for his meticulous technique and exceptional patient outcomes.
He pursued his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, before returning to the Bay Area to complete medical school and dermatology residency at UCSF—one of the nation’s most prestigious training programs. He then completed a fellowship in Mohs skin cancer surgery, gaining expertise in advanced facial reconstruction and all aspects of Mohs surgery.
Following his training, Dr. Lowenstein worked in multiple dermatology practices, specializing in Mohs surgery, general dermatology, and cosmetic dermatology. Over the years, he has developed expertise in a range of cosmetic treatments, including Botox, fillers, and various laser procedures. Notably, he has become one of the few dermatologists with specialized proficiency in full-face laser resurfacing, a highly sought-after treatment.
Dr. Lowenstein’s vision for Aesthetic Dermatology and Skin Cancer is to continue delivering high-quality dermatologic care while enhancing the overall patient experience.

Experienced the worst bedside manner from this doctor.
1. Doctor unexpectedly appeared with two other assistants whom he failed to introduce--I had my shirt off.
2. Didn't ask before wanting to shake my hand...I'm not fond of physical touch with strangers and assuming otherwise is unprofessional.
3. The examination/diagnosis was done under 10 secs and he didn't even fully explain what the cyst was, why they form etc. Very pushy about me booking the minor surgery to have it removed, same day.
4. Horrifyingly, did not wait for me to get dressed before opening the door, in full view of waiting room.
There are other reviews here that have left the same feedback on the lacking bedside manner and privacy. Just appalling.

As a first timer, I wasn’t assessed properly or briefed on how a proper dermatologic consult should be. I wasn’t provided a skin assessment and provided the appropriate management options according to my skin type and condition. The doctor wasn’t accommodating and did not make me feel comfortable at all. When I brought up specific skin concerns, he was not very interested in providing the best options for me, making me feel that unimportant.

I had been suffering from a horrible rash for over a month and was misdiagnosed twice. This was the third outbreak I had in two years. The moment Dr. Lowenstein saw my face, he knew immediately what it was. To finally get a diagnosis and to be treated right away was amazing! The relief I felt almost made me cry. Dr Stefan Lowenstein seemed like he was in a rush when he saw me. Maybe it was because I had a relatively minor skin complaint, but I did not feel like he spent an adequate amount of time to look at my skin more clearly, have time to address my questions/concerns, etc.
