Getting to know Dr. Suzanne Adams

Current Openings: Tuesdays at 2pm PT/5pm ET or Thursdays at 8:30am PT/11:30am ET Everyone deserves a safe space to be brutally honest, and that's not always available to us in our everyday relationships. I believe the therapeutic space should provide you with an open, receptive, and calming environment to explore parts of ourselves that have been previously unknown, unconscious, hidden, or unacknowledged. It is also a space to vent, process, heal, grow, and challenge yourself. I don't necessarily believe that therapy is always about healing what's broken or becoming a "better" you, but it can be about becoming the truest version of yourself. By nature, I am a grounded person who approaches our time together with honor, humor, and—above all—hope. Clients I work with have described me as deeply grounded and generous of spirit. I create meaningful conversations for you to explore whatever feels poignant. I am calming, creative, curious, humorous, open-minded, and accepting of whatever you bring into our work together. I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology and a Master’s in Psychology from Sofia University, as well as a Bachelor’s degree from Moravian University. This educational background informs my approach and commitment to supporting you on your journey.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When beginning our work together, I prefer to meet weekly as this helps us to more quickly establish a positive rapport with one another and also helps us to gain traction on the issues at hand. Often folks can feel as though things get worse before they get better; this is because we are finally shining a light on topics that have been previously ignored or left unexamined. Depending on one's openness and willingness, progress will be just around the corner. I have education and extensive training in using transpersonal, humanistic, existential, psychodynamic, and Jungian frameworks. I also have expertise in body-oriented interventions, such as somatic process work and somatic trauma recovery. As a trained clinician in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), I incorporate this modality based on your interests & specific needs. Gestalt techniques and Parts Work, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and harm reduction are also tools I use in treatment. Based on your interests, I also incorporate creative expression, such as narrative therapy and art therapy based techniques. Generally, I find mindfulness practices, including Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP), to be highly effective. I love to give clients homework in between sessions since healing doesn't just occur during 50 minutes a week. Change happens in the in between. These will be experiential or reflective practices to bolster the work we do together in session and give you a chance to experiment or exercise with new skills or perspectives.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session would focus on building rapport with each other and discussing your personal background. This gives me a foundational place to understand you, where I can then identify patterns or themes that might inform our work in the future. Ongoing sessions will be led largely by you and your needs; there may be instances in which I take the lead in order explore a specific area of curiosity or interest to our work. I utilize an eclectic set of modalities that will be tailored to meet your needs. I will also follow up on homework exercises to see what works, what doesn't, and what adjustments we need to make. We will reassess our goals and your progress periodically throughout our work together to ensure we are on the best path for you.
