Getting to know Dr. Thomas Whitfield

I pride myself on providing a supportive platform for my patients to explore the internal and external obstacles that stop them from reaching their life's desires. You and I will work to foster lifelong change by challenging unhelpful thinking and behavioral patterns in an environment that offers warmth, empathy, and safety. Professional Background I earned my PhD in Health Psychology and Clinical Science from CUNY, The City University of New York, Graduate Center. I have worked with diverse populations across various settings, including outpatient, inpatient, hospital, and university environments. My experience spans both short- and long-term therapy. In addition to my PhD, I hold two Master's degrees-one in Psychology and the other in Philosophy. I have published numerous studies in international peer-reviewed scientific journals. Much of my research and intervention development has focused on helping minority populations, particularly LGBTQIA+ individuals and couples, manage their sexual health and build intimacy. My dissertation research, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, is partially published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.

What should a new client know about working with you?

We will collaborate on all treatment decisions. We will begin with setting goals for therapy, making them measurable, and prioritizing where to start. For anxiety and anxiety related disorders, depression, and other mood related disorders I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I also incorporate skills and tools from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), and mindfulness approaches. For individuals who have experienced trauma (including but not limited to physical and sexual trauma), I may recommend Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Written Exposure Therapy (WET), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PET), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). This may sound like a lot of jargon; one of the first goals of our work together will be to help you figure out what's best for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After scheduling an appointment you will receive a call to set up a brief 15-20 minute call to make sure we are a match for therapy.

Working with Dr. Thomas Whitfield has genuinely been one of the best experiences I’ve had in therapy. From the very beginning, he created a space that felt completely safe and judgment-free. His approach strikes the perfect balance between warmth and honesty — he listens carefully but also challenges you in the best way possible. Working with Dr. Thomas Whitfield was truly life-changing. His guidance and support helped me navigate and heal from PTSD in a way I never thought possible. I left each session feeling lighter, more optimistic, and genuinely hopeful about the future. Even 1.5 years later, I continue to feel the positive impact of our work together—my mental health is stronger than ever. Choosing to work with Dr. Whitfield was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone seeking compassionate, effective care.
I’m usually skeptical about therapists and I have a hard time opening up - Dr. Whitfield is the real deal. He’s open and honest, which is what I was looking for, and he makes me feel safe to speak to my trauma and how I feel. I needed a therapist that was going to make me feel comfortable, but also help me change my life in a better direction, and that’s exactly what he brings to the table. I’m glad I found him.
Dr. Thomas Whitfield is a great therapist! I found him to be warm, yet very honest in his approach. As someone who deals with trauma, I felt like I was in a safe space with him, and his guidance/advice was incredibly helpful for me in working through these issues. I cannot recommend working with him enough!
I love Dr. Whitfield. He is generous with his time and his insight. He’s extremely caring, and I was able to establish a very good rapport with him from the very beginning. I recommend him highly!
I saw Dr.Whitfield for a bit over a year. In that time was given tools to help ground myself in my everyday life. He was empathic and easy to open up to.
Dr Whitfield provided a thoughtful, strategic ear as our couples' therapist for 6 solid months. He was adept at navigating both our areas of strength and improvement and allowed us the space to speak openly about our marriage. Not once did he push his own opinions- he simply guided us to make the best decision for our marriage through productive conversation. Dr Whitfield has a heart of gold and I feel truly lucky to have had his assistance as we navigated this very challenging time.
I felt so comfortable with Dr. Whitfield and really appreciate his sense of humor and calm demeanor. It allowed me to feel safe talking to him about unsafe experiences from my past. Can’t recommend him enough!
After several mediocre experiences with therapists, working with Dr. Whitfield was above & beyond valuable. Our sessions together were always structured and professional - I was able to explore emotions and behaviors I was experiencing and developed a new level of self-understanding. I couldn't recommend him more!
Dr. Whitfield leads with empathy to help you understand behaviors and actions. My former partner and I (both gay males in our 30’s) worked through couples therapy where Dr. Whitfield skillfully identified root causes of our impasse. He approaches situations with care and open ears to facilitate productive discussions. My partner and I both agreed that Dr. Whitfield’s methodical process and person-ability differentiated him from other therapists we interviewed. Most critically, Dr. Whitfield constructively challenges you to work introspectively between sessions. This re-established the connection to our emotional and mental health. Regardless of the outcome, the tools Dr. Whitfield equips you with the confidence to process situations in the moment and move forward.
Dr. Whitfield helped me tremendously navigate some of most major life transitions in recent years including a breakup, career pivot, and move. He is a true professional, has a calm / patient demeanor, and does the hard work to make sure that he's always prepared to talk about the most important topics, keeping in mind things I previously shared.
Dr. Whitfield is great if you're looking for someone to chat with through a problem and learn how to handle situations better on your own. I saw Dr. Whitfield for a year or two and he provided me with tools that I still refer to whenever I find myself in anxious thought cycles or situations. Highly recommend!
Dr. Whitfield was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful throughout our time together. He always made my needs feel important and was able to help me even in the most adverse situations. I would highly recommend his services to anyone!
My experience with Dr. Whitfield was really amazing. He helped me to open up to seeing my situation from another perspective and dare to see the optimism. He exudes compassion and empathy, and I haven't felt so deeply seen by a therapist before. I really appreciated his kindness and gentleness. I felt very safely held in his space.
I don't even know where to begin. I am forever grateful for Dr. Whitfield and his service. His continued support, understanding, and reassurance was monumental in my journey of healing and self acceptance. I would not be where I am today without his guidance. While it was a rollercoaster of emotion over the course of 6 months, it was well worth it to come out on the other side. Dr. Whitfield not only provided top notch service during our weekly sessions, he had me work on various exercises outside of our 1:1s and held me accountable to it. He was a sounding board when I reached out outside of our scheduled sessions and provided me with the tools I continue to use today. It is evident how much he actually cares about his patients and makes sure to follow up and check in. I can't say enough positive things about my experience with Dr. Whitfield. He's the best!
I was very happy with the sessions I had with Thomas. I found the treatment to be very effective! It was very structured, which I appreciate; and it allowed me to see my past trauma in a different light. Honestly, it changed my life and I can't thank him enough.
