Dr. William Heard, PsyD

Dr. William Heard, PsyD

Psychologist
IL
Hi, my name is William (he/him, gay identified), and I am a postdoctoral fellow and therapist at Freelife Behavioral Health. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Personally, I am a huge foodie, a gardener, and a tinkerer, and I tend to be happiest when surrounded by really good food, plants, or my dog, Wally (Wallace when he is in trouble). Speaking of Wally, he tries his best to be quiet while my husband or I are working, but sometimes you may hear him in the background snoring or saying hello to the neighbors during our sessions together.

Getting to know Dr. William Heard

What should a new client know about working with you?

I tend to use cognitive behavioral therapy with my clients and spend a lot of time exploring the connections between the situations we are in, our thoughts and our feelings. I love working together to identify why you are feeling the way you are, and exploring ways to make that experience more manageable for you in the future. To me, therapy feels life completing the middle part of a puzzle. The edges/outline are there and we have a good understanding of what the final picture is, but all the pieces aren’t connected yet. As we continue to work together, my hope is that we are able to connect more and more pieces together until you feel like you have an understanding of how to create meaningful change in the places that are causing you emotional distress.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I love working with adult clients. I tend to align best with patients who are at a crossroads in their life, whether that be setting out on your own in your early 20s, changing your career/identity in your mid 30s-40s, or retirement in your 60s-70s. I am also trained and enjoy working with clients who are at the end of their life, have experienced major traumatic events, or who are grieving the loss of their loved one.
