Getting to know Dr. Yun Chen
I am Dr. Yun Chen, a licensed clinical psychologist. Applying evidence-based psychotherapy, I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression, chronic pain, trauma, OCD, and couples in relationship distress.
I practice evidence-based psychotherapy, in particular cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), integrating skills from various schools of psychology (e.g., skills from dialectical behavior therapy). I also have extensive experience working with couples. In particular, I practice cognitive behavioral couple therapy (CBCT) and emotionally focused therapy (EFT) to promote relationship strength for couples whose relationships are under stress.
I grew up in Shanghai, China, and completed undergraduate at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor (Go Blue!). I earned my Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and completed my predoctoral internship (2020-2021) at the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. I proudly served as the front-line mental health provider in the face of COVID-19.
What should a new client know about working with you?
In my clinical work, I coach my clients on the wisdom of accepting the experience life brings to them (wanted or unwanted) and committee to actions that would bring meaning to their lives.
Life is a package. When you open it, there will be something you want and don't. Sometimes, life is great; other times, without our approval, life may shift in directions we have never thought about (e.g., an accident). In heart-breaking moments like this, life's wisdom depends on our choices: choose to dwell in the pain and be stuck (e.g., depression), or carry the pain with us, continue to move forward, and create opportunities for a meaningful life. Such wisdom is embedded in everybody's heart; I am committed to working with you to discover your knowledge and pursue a meaningful life.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
Intake Assessment: The goal of this 60-minute session is for me to get a deeper understanding of your concerns and goals for therapy. Based on your clinical presentations, I will talk about a preliminary treatment plan with you. I will also answer questions about treatment and help you understand what to expect going forward.
Therapy: Therapy sessions are typically 30-45 minutes long (45-60 for couple therapy). I believe the goal of therapy is to reach a point where you are free from therapy. During the initial stage of therapy (first 5-10 sessions), I often take more of the lead and set up the foundation for treatment success. your journey. Eventually, we conclude the therapy work, and you walk away with the confidence to move life forward.

Dr. Chen is amazing! He is highly professional, genuinely caring, and warm. No matter how high or low my mood is before a session, he has the magic to bring therapeutic effect into the session and make me feeling lighter and better afterward. At the same time, he is very sharp and direct in the best way. He thoughtfully challenges my instinctive thought patterns that I had rarely examined consciously and discuses with me about what practical changes I can make.
I had a not-so-easy year to navigate, and Dr. Chen has been a very empowering therapist throughout this journey. I’m truly grateful to have him as part of my life journey.

I’ve had a very positive experience with **Dr. Chen**, whom I have been seeing for about a year. He is patient, understanding, and never judgmental or pushy, which made it easy for me to feel comfortable and open during sessions. He is also very flexible with scheduling and was able to see me when I needed support most.
Dr. Chen takes a thoughtful and adaptable approach, offering many practical strategies and continuing to adjust them until we found what worked best for me. He helped me see situations from different perspectives and provided useful methods I could apply in daily life. Dr. Yun is truly a professional - he helped me navigate a tough relationship and treated both parties with fairness and equality. His warmth, ability to summarize issues, and drive easily actionable next steps makes him such a great therapist.
My only regret is that I couldn't have more sessions with him - I would 100% have him as my own therapist if insurance providers worked out.

Dr. Chen always makes me feel comfortable and encouraged. I feel heard and seen during our sessions. What I like the most about our session is that he is able to be flexible and try different ways to help me. I always worry about not improving or not being able to complete assignments or some exercises but he doesn't give me any pressure and he is very understanding. Since my naive language is Mandarin Chinese, it is very helpful when it comes to communication or expressing things with Dr. Chen. Another thing I like about my visits is that he allows me to share whatever I want and does not restrict me on what area or topic I would like to focus on. His patience and professionalism has helped me improve my cognitive thinking through talk therapy. I highly recommend Dr. Chen if you also speaks Chinese Mandarin and if you are looking for a therapist that is versatile and challenge you in a supportive way that would help you grow.
