Aetna and its coverage

Aetna is a healthcare company established in 1853 in Hartford, Connecticut, and holds a special place in American healthcare. 1963 marked a milestone for the company as that was the first time it processed the first Medicare claim within the United States. In 2018, CVS Health Corp. took over Aetna, a move that further solidified its position in the healthcare market. Approximately 39 million individuals rely on Aetna for their healthcare needs, benefiting from a vast network of over 1 million providers nationwide.

Under the umbrella of CVS Health, Aetna continues to serve as a trusted advisor for millions of people, assisting them in navigating healthcare decisions and expenditures. Aetna's comprehensive range of health insurance plans and services encompasses medical, pharmacy, and dental coverage alongside specialized offerings such as Medicare plans, Medicaid services, and behavioral health programs. Through robust medical management strategies, Aetna strives to ensure optimal healthcare outcomes for its members.

Understanding premiums in healthcare

Understanding your annual healthcare costs involves considering several components of the overall expense. These components include premiums and deductibles. Let's delve into each of these and explore how they contribute to paying for healthcare:

Premiums

  • Premiums are the recurring payments required to maintain your health care coverage. Typically, higher premiums correspond to lower deductibles.

  • An example of how it works: Dennis, 45, has avidly cycled for most of his life, but recently, he has noticed that his knees are starting to ache more frequently. Concerned about his long-term joint health, Dennis switched to a new healthcare plan through his employer. While the premiums for this plan are higher, it offers lower deductibles and copayments. This is particularly important for Dennis as he anticipates needing more frequent visits to orthopedic specialists and physical therapists to manage his knee pain.

While the premiums for this plan are higher, it offers lower deductibles and copayments, and this is particularly important for Dennis as he anticipates needing more frequent visits to orthopedic specialists and physical therapists to manage his knee pain.

Although Dennis may not be ready to retire just yet, he's taking proactive steps to ensure that he can continue enjoying his favorite activities for years to come while prioritizing his health and financial well-being.

Deductibles

  • A deductible refers to the sum of money you must pay upfront for certain healthcare services before your health insurance coverage starts to contribute. Essentially, it's the initial expense you shoulder before your insurance begins to cover costs.

  • An example of how it works: Rebecca, a 38-year-old software engineer, recently moved into her first home, a cozy apartment in downtown San Francisco. She appreciates the building amenities, like the rooftop garden and yoga studio, as she values maintaining her physical and mental well-being. Her doctor discovered an abnormality in her thyroid gland during a routine check-up. After further tests, doctors determined that it was a benign nodule, but it still required surgical removal.

Rebecca will cover the initial expenses of the surgery until she reaches her $2,000 deductible, which is the amount she has to pay before her insurance kicks in. Fortunately, her surgeon and hospital are within her insurance network, so once she meets the deductible, she will only be responsible for 30% of the remaining costs for the year. Knowing that she'll hit her deductible early on gives her peace of mind, especially if she encounters any unexpected medical expenses later in the year.

You may learn more about other insurance terms by consulting our guide.

What is travel insurance? Does Aetna provide it?

Travel insurance, helpful for both domestic and international travel, helps cover any financial losses due to unpredictable circumstances that could ruin your trip, including accidents, illness, injury, and transportation delays. The insurance costs 4% to 10% of a trip's price.

Trip cancellation coverage, baggage and personal effects coverage, rental property and car coverage, and medical coverage are among the main categories of travel insurance.

If you purchase travel insurance, you might have concurrent insurance coverage, meaning you're covered under multiple policies. The coverage can be of two types:

  • Primary: You do not have to make a claim through another company to receive reimbursement from your travel insurance
  • Secondary: In order to receive reimbursement, you must first try to file a claim with other coverages, such as your auto insurance (damaged car) or an airline (lost baggage)

Aetna travel insurance covers worldwide trips for up to 180 days at a time when you take out an Aetna Travel plan with an Aetna Pioneer or Summit plan. However, you are not covered for any medical conditions you had within the 24 months before you joined the plan or booked a trip. The yearly premium is $80 for people aged 0-21 and $215 for people aged 22-79. The company provides premium renewal quotations for individuals aged over 79.

Aetna’s travel insurance coverage includes:

  • Medical benefits: Up to $3,400,000
  • Travel delays: Up to $255
  • Delayed baggage: Up to $170
  • Loss of money: Up to $850
  • Baggage and personal effects: Up to $3,400
  • Missed departure and travel disruption: Up to $1,700

Who is a nutritionist?

A nutritionist is an expert who educates individuals about the fundamentals of nutrition, the importance of dietary decisions, and how diet affects general health. They are crucial in advising people on managing various medical conditions like hypertension or obesity through nutritional adjustments.

Nutrition significantly contributes to health and well-being and is recognized for its profound effects on the body. Those pursuing a career in nutrition can find employment opportunities in diverse settings such as:

  • Hospitals and clinics
  • Private institutions
  • Research institutions
  • Nursing homes and assisted living facilities
  • Local health departments
  • School districts
  • Sports organizations

Understanding the distinction between nutritionists and dietitians

Nutritionists and dietitians both possess expertise in the specific field of nutrition and its impact on health. However, it's essential to recognize the nuanced differences between these two professions rather than using their titles interchangeably.

Nutritionists primarily offer guidance, advice, and support concerning dietary needs. Their role doesn't involve diagnosing or treating illnesses, nor do they prescribe specific diets or supplements. Instead, they provide strategies to ensure individuals meet their nutritional requirements effectively.

On the other hand, a dietitian specializes in dietetics, a field dedicated to understanding how diet influences health outcomes. They are certified to use nutritional treatments to diagnose and treat specific medical disorders. It includes prescribing tailored diets and supplements as part of medical nutrition therapy to manage or alleviate illnesses.

What New Yorkers need to know about public health insurance

According to a Health Insurance Coverage in New York report published in August 2023 by the Office of New York State Comptroller, the State Department of Health (DOH) plays a crucial role in administering various public health insurance programs, including Medicaid, the Essential Plan, Child Health Plus (CHP), and the New York health plan marketplace (NY State of Health). As of June 2023, enrollment figures indicated substantial participation, with 8 million individuals enrolled in Medicaid, 1.2 million in the Essential Plan, and 367,589 in CHP. Child Health Plus explicitly targets children under 19 who are ineligible for Medicaid but reside in New York, providing coverage for families earning up to 400 percent of the poverty level.

The report also stated that while private health insurance predominates nationally (67 percent) and in New York (65.9 percent) among insured individuals, there is a notable reliance on public health insurance programs in New York compared to the rest of the nation. Over the past decade, New York has seen a significant increase in enrollment in public health insurance, rising from 33 percent in 2010 to 41.9 percent in 2021, consistently surpassing national rates. Medicaid and Medicare account for the primary drivers of this increase, with Medicaid enrollment rates climbing from 21.2 percent in 2010 to 27.7 percent in 2021, exceeding national Medicaid enrollment figures every year.
