Getting to know Colin Cranna

Disclaimer: Providers at Canino Psychotherapy focus on therapy services and do not prescribe medication, as they are not psychiatrists. Colin Cranna, LMHC BS in Psychology - Fordham University 2012 MA in Mental Health Counseling - Iona University 2017 For many, beginning therapy can be an intimidating or daunting undertaking. And reasonably so, we fear or question what we do not know or understand. The fear of opening up to a stranger or the prospect of trying to improve but failing-just a couple of common concerns-are tough obstacles to face. I'm here to convey that though the process may be challenging, the rewards and deep fulfillment one can gain from therapy make it worth the effort. I believe in taking an empathic and non-judgmental approach with all of my clients in order to establish a trusting and safe therapeutic environment. My approachable demeanor and ability to find commonalities with my clients help facilitate an honest, collaborative therapeutic relationship. I primarily utilize principles from cognitive behavioral therapy as well as mindfulness to ensure evidence-based practice. I value and recognize each client's unique needs and implement a personalized approach based on their goals. As a multiculturally sensitive and competent counselor, I welcome the opportunity to work with individuals from various ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds. My experience and work as a counselor is wide-ranging. I've worked with individuals experiencing mood disorders, anxiety, relationship or communication issues, as well as young adults on the autism spectrum. I'm a dedicated, compassionate therapist who employs a client-centered approach to target, address, and mitigate each individual's distinct set of challenges or areas of improvement. *Telehealth sessions are available. *Please kindly note that we do not provide psychiatry services (medication) and are unable to accept Medicaid insurance plans at this time.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I would like prospective clients to know that I do my very best to be genuinely sensitive, caring, and non-judgmental. I strive to seek to understand each client in addition to helping them reach a keener understanding of themselves. A therapeutic outcome that I believe is relevant to all clients, albeit conscious or unconscious, is to seek or gain acceptance of themselves. When a client can feel an authentic like or appreciation for his or herself, it’s indicative the therapeutic process is working! *Please kindly note that we do not provide psychiatry services (medication) and are unable to accept UnitedHealthcare Medicaid insurance plans at this time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The theoretical orientations that I adhere to are cognitive behavioral and client-centered. I believe the bulk of therapeutic work commences once I’ve had an opportunity to build rapport and gain each client’s trust. Following an intake assessment, which is primarily used as an information gathering session, I tend to provide clients with an overview of the therapeutic process, identifying individualized treatment goals, and providing new clients with psychoeducation to begin sensitizing them to what treatment will “look” or “feel” like. I engage each client with compassion, empathy, a non-judgmental attitude, and honesty. I am respectful of each individual's subjective experience and unique attitudes and beliefs, which helps facilitate meaningful therapeutic change and growth!

From what I experienced, he is extremely knowledgeable of different CBT skills. He is also an effective listener. He doesn't pre form an opinion. I've had therapists assume before getting full details. Looking forward to learning and growing.
