“She was awesome at helping my partner and I work through our relationship issues. If we were having a particularly tough session she'd stay late to make sure we didn't end angry with each other. Very caring!”

Getting to know Dr. Cynthia Doodeman

QUEER NOTIONS PSYCHOLOGY LTD Hello! I'm guessing you are thinking about seeing a psychologist, maybe as a member of the LGBTQ+ community with concerns about your sexuality, gender, or other sensitive issues. It's a significant commitment to embark on a journey through your psyche or relationships. Choosing a professional you can trust who will truly hear you, your pain, confusion, and fears is daunting. It also requires commitment to your time, budget, and trust. BE AWARE, I DON'T PRESCRIBE MEDICATION. I am a queer, licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience. I earned my Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology and completed clinical training at Regional Health Systems - East Chicago Care Center. My specialty is LGBTQ+ issues and relationship counseling for couples, non-traditional relationship configurations, consensual nonmonogamy, and kink lifestyles. I work with individuals, couples, and polycules facing challenges in living, living together, communicating, and navigating conflict. I have experience supporting individuals through gender issues, gender nonconformity, and transitioning. I am knowledgeable about HIV/AIDS, have medical training, and do crisis work. My therapeutic approach is grounded in Client-Centered Therapy, with experience and training in Emotion-Focused Therapy and Experiential Psychotherapy. This means I honor the processes you naturally use to work out problems while helping you be more accepting of how you think and feel, find and resolve trauma, and work out relationship problems. I am known for being warm, empathic, nonjudgmental, and authentic. You can trust me to keep your secrets, welcome your thoughts, and honor your problem-solving process. I fully respect that you are the expert on you, and I welcome YOU. You will have my commitment if you make a commitment to yourself. Select a time slot. I hope to meet you soon! Warmly, Cindy (Cynthia Doodeman, Psy.D.)

What should a new client know about working with you?

I practice as a Client-Centered psychotherapist, as a real person engaging in a helping role with real people. I don't subscribe to a lot of philosophies that hold the therapist as THE authority about YOUR life. We will collaborate, perhaps experiment, and sort out feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that help and those that hurt, hold us back from our potential, or otherwise keep us from living our true and best selves. Carl Rogers' theories on psychotherapy, personality, and relating in an empathic, non-judgmental, and authentic way are necessary for a therapeutic relationship. I offer you warmth and genuineness and will work in your best interests.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Typically, I meet with clients, couples, and families for an hour or so weekly. You will usually have a standing virtual or in-person appointment with me on the same day at the same time each week. There are exceptions and flexibility with these meetings. My usual fee for no insurance or out-of-pocket services is on a sliding scale of $80 to 190 per session, payable at the time of our appointment. BE AWARE, I DO NOT PRESCRIBE MEDICATION

I had forgotten what it was like to see a provider that also specializes in LGBTQIA care. It's refreshing to feel seen and safe in therapy even if I wasn't talking about issues around my gender or sexuality. I really felt that she has legitimate compassion for who I am and what I was dealing with.
