What should a new client know about working with you?

I approach each person with respect for the complexity and individuality of their experience, and believe that therapy should ultimately strengthen your ability to make choices about your own life. My style is warm, nonjudgmental, and collaborative. I value the ways our identities—visible or not—shape how we experience ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us, while approaching each person as a whole and unique individual. I strive to make therapy a familiar and reliable space, while still leaving room for experimentation and for you to follow your own instincts. You can follow an idea without knowing where it will lead, ask questions, try on different ways of understanding yourself, and see how they feel over time. I will listen closely to what you bring from session to session and hold onto those threads with you. That might mean sitting with uncertainty together, reflecting something I’m noticing, or asking a question when I sense there may be more beneath the surface. I don’t think you need to come to therapy knowing exactly what to talk about or put pressure on yourself to uncover the “right” problem. I believe it’s important that we can speak openly about the therapy itself—what feels useful, what feels difficult, and what may not be working. I’ll bring my own observations and questions to our conversations while remaining attentive to how you experience our work together. We can work together to develop new ways of coping, practice mindfulness, or consider shifts in perspective when these approaches are helpful. At its core, though, my work is grounded in supporting you as you come to understand and relate differently to capacities and ways of knowing that are already there.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I approach therapy as a place for expressing and processing what feels immediate and alive in the room with you, first and foremost. We’ll begin by discussing your present needs, along with relevant parts of your history as they come into view. From there, the structure of our work can emerge over time. Healing and self-discovery rarely happen linearly or neatly. New stressors and challenges may arise, and what feels most important to talk about can change from one session to the next. At times, our sessions may follow a clear thread as we work through something specific; at others, something new may ask for our attention. Over time, we can remain curious about the connections between these experiences and larger patterns in your life. Therapy can take different shapes depending on what brings you in. If you come with a specific goal, problem, or skills you’d like to develop, we can give those aims more structure and track them over time. If you’re looking for a more open-ended space to understand yourself, your relationships, or recurring patterns more deeply, our work can unfold in that way as well. Often, therapy moves between the two.
