Daphne Smith, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
My name is Daphne Smith, and I am a Licensed Social Worker with over 20 years of experience. My approach to therapy is motivational in style, grounded in multiple cognitive behavioral techniques. I focus on general mental health, families, PTSD, and trauma. My approach In my practice, I utilize cognitive behavioral approaches to help change behaviors or patterns of thinking. When working with trauma, I use a cognitive processing approach to help process the trauma and reduce distressing symptoms. My focus I have experience working with adults, children, families, Veterans, and first responders. My communication style I am open and honest and believe that open communication and trust are the most important values in a therapeutic relationship. I do not judge others' personal beliefs or values, as I believe everyone has the right to their own opinion. My journey to therapy I began my career working with people struggling with addictions. I was an addiction therapist while completing my education in social work. After graduation, I worked with children and families to help prevent children from being removed from their homes. This included supporting children facing emotional challenges as well as difficulties in school and family life. I continued this work as a general mental health therapist in a community-based program for five years. I then worked in the judicial system, again focusing on addictions, in an alternative-to-incarceration program for several years before moving to the VA and beginning my work with Veterans. In working with Veterans, I have experience in general mental health as well as PTSD and trauma. My goals for you Setting goals with clients should always be based on the client's own goals. My first session with you Initial sessions with me involve getting to know each other, defining what to begin working on, and understanding what you, as the client, want to achieve through therapy.
