Getting to know David Witten

David views the therapeutic process as a collaborative effort and recognizes each person as an individual with their own needs and desires. An essential aspect of treatment is providing the individual with the space and safety to explore and express themselves in a confidential environment. This promotes a greater sense of self-awareness and self-acceptance. David's approach draws on a relational psychodynamic orientation, informed by infant and attachment research, as well as contemporary neuroscience. However, the individual's experience is always privileged in guiding the process, with a focus on finding the best way to help each person move forward in their life. David holds a Master's in Social Work from New York University. He is co-director of the Foundations of Psychoanalysis Program at the Institute of the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, where he also teaches and supervises. Additionally, David has experience working with children, adolescents, and adults, providing an in-depth understanding of human development and the major issues and milestones that surround all stages of the life cycle. He has also worked at multiple community mental health clinics and served as a consultant in various high schools, integrating counseling for individuals and families. David works with individuals struggling with a wide range of treatment issues including depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, relationships, life-cycle transitions, academic and occupational transitions, emerging adulthood, obsessive-compulsive disorder, impulsivity, addiction and recovery, grief and loss, and low self-esteem.

Very positive experience. David asked good questions and found his feedback helpful.
If I didn't know better I would have though he was stoned

I have been to multiple therapists in my life and found David to be one of the most genuine and empathic. I liked that he seemed to have no agenda and was most interested on understanding what I wanted to work on in a collaborative way.
I was pleasantly surprised at how David seemed easily able to grasp the essence of my struggles, while not at all feeling that he was dismissing my distress. 5 Stars!!!
Very nice and knowledgeable.
I felt he really listened to me and helped to clarify what has been troubling me so much. I will be returning and am very happy to have found someone that I can trust.
David was extremely compassionate and immediately made me feel at ease. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a therapist.
I don't normally write reviews, but for so long I put off trying therapy and being overwhelmed by everything, and now wish that I had started earlier. David has really been a huge part of bringing a sense of order to all the chaos in my life. My lesson is that there is no need to wait and definitely not as scary as I thought it would be.
I would recommend David as a therapist. I have been feeling hopeless for a longtime, but after a few sessions I am finally feel a sense of hope.
David made me feel very welcome and relaxed, even though this was my first time in therapy. I found him very easy to open up to, and totally non-judgmental. I look forward to continuing our sessions!
Strange guy. It could have been just terrible chemistry but honestly I felt like it would be impossible to talk to him. I don't know exactly why but the session was so awkward. He did really seem like he was high or just out of it.
I really appreciate David's style of being open and listening closely. He helped me understand how different aspects of my life are connected and influence how I react in certain situations.
I always feel comfortable speaking with David, and he continues to provide the support that I need during this difficult period of time that I am struggling with.
David is patient, caring and a fantastic listener. His style of communication is relaxed, but thoughtful and proactive enough to help me work through areas of anxiety. Very much recommended.

I recently moved to New York and was sad to leave my old therapist and hesitant to begin with someone new. However, I met with David and was relieved to find that he understood my concerns and responded to me with sensitivity and insight.

I felt David really got me and was able to ask good questions which allowed me to open up in areas that I have been avoiding for too long. I am really happy I found him and would suggest David to anyone looking for a therapist.
I had never been to therapy before and was nervous about starting, but David made the experience easy and comfortable. He wasn't pushy and allowed me to go at my own pace. I would highly recommend David to anyone thinking about therapy.
I felt David was extremely helpful in allowing me to identify the issues that I want to work on to grow and giving me hope this is possible.
Anxiety has been a lifelong issue for me and although I know there isn't a quick fix, it was extremely reassuring to meet with David and feel that he understood and was willing to help me find the best ways for me to manage it.
Unlike other areas, a therapist is a very personal and specific thing. A review is not very useful, as was the case here with the reviews I read and my personal experience. Nice guy, but completely the wrong fit for me. Very much a listener and not proactive in the conversation. Repeated a lot back to me. For me, not the fit I need. Someone else with a different set of topics to discuss might find David to be a great fit. This type of thing is very much trial and error. But a great experience to learn what works/doesn't for me.
I typically don't write reviews but I'm going through a very difficult time and needed to find someone to talk to. David is quiet, caring, he listens and he urges you to explore your emotions. It was really helpful for me to tell him things and then let him help me figure out what it meant. Other therapists have asked how I felt but not really explored it. David seems to genuinely care and wants to help me find out.

David is patient and compassionate. I felt that he really took the time to get to know me and understand the difficulties I was experiencing. He was MUCH better than the other therapist I have seen in the past. 5 stars all around.
I had never been to therapy before and was nervous about starting, but David made the experience easy and comfortable. He wasn't pushy and allowed me to go at my own pace. I would suggest David to anyone thinking about therapy.
I would highly recommend David to anyone. He is very patient and understanding and has helped me through a tough time and our work together has greatly helped me understand myself better and as a result many of my relationships have improved.
