Getting to know Emily Hehmeyer

Disclaimer: Providers at Canino Psychotherapy focus on therapy services and do not prescribe medication, as they are not psychiatrists. As a licensed clinical social worker, I work with children, adolescents, and adults who are looking to improve their lives. After obtaining my BS degree at the University of Vermont, I joined the Peace Corps and worked in a public health clinic in Vanuatu. Upon my return, I attended NYU and received my MSW degree. I have extensive training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectic behavioral therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, trauma-focused therapy, mindfulness, and narrative therapy. My experience includes working in outpatient clinics and inpatient hospitals, including a mobile crisis unit, an ACT team, medical surgical units, and a domestic violence shelter. I offer a respectful, safe, compassionate, and trauma-informed space to guide you in becoming your best self. Whether it be depression, anxiety, stress, life transitions, trauma, or personal conflicts, my goal is to guide and support you towards wellness and healing.

What should a new client know about working with you?

During my sessions, I will provide a nonjudgmental space for you to explore and work towards your goals. I am committed to working with you in your therapeutic journey. *Please kindly note that we do not provide psychiatry services (medication) and are unable to accept UnitedHealthcare Medicaid insurance plans at this time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Whatever your or your current struggle is, we will focus on progress, not perfection. I’ll hold you accountable, always treating you with respect and compassion. We will explore the factors and thought or behavioral patterns that have enabled and limited you from reaching your full potential. I’ll equip you with skills to draw on the strengths you already have to build a better functioning, stronger self.

I had a great experience with Emily. She was really nice understanding.
Was very please with the visit and the person whom I spoke with. Very satified.
Therapist did a no call no show for our 3rd session appointment together. I took the initiative to write an email stating our missed appointment aka therapist not showing up or not communicating/ checking in with me. Therapist took no accountability. Did not seem professional to me. Probably wouldn’t recommend.

She’s lost in life. Whatever she expected from this therapist job is not it. It was sad to see. The first appointment she was daydreaming. Head tilted. Furrowed brow the whole time I was talking…. It was disturbing. She looked like she rolled out of bed and didn’t even brush her teeth. She had no feedback to give .. she would just sigh and go “huh…” I mean whatever pays the bills right? Everybody has to eat. I thought hmm… let me give it a shot. Told her I would see her twice a week (easy cash) and we made plans for the next year to see each other Tuesday and Friday. Today is Friday. We had an appointment for 3:00pm and it is now 3:13pm. Nothing. Silence. Texted her. Called her. Emailed her. Silence. Despicable. She will never hear or see from me again. I wish her healing and that she finds her path in life. This profession is not her path. And deep down? She knows I am right. Blessed be.

Emily is very helpful and respectful.
Emily was caring and empathetic to my issues. I have been seeing her for a few months and feel she has helped me tackle my goals as well as provide support when needed in difficult situations. I could not be happier and look forward to our weekly visits.
Emily is an amazing person to deal with. She's very respectful and takes her job serious. Emily makes it her business to go above and beyond for her patients, I'd highly recommend her.
