Getting to know Eric Rosenblum

Eric is a fully licensed marriage and family therapist practicing virtually and in-person in Manhattan's Financial District and in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. He holds a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Mercy University. Eric approaches therapy with a creative, inquisitive, and eclectic style. He has a range of interests and specializations including sex therapy, couples therapy, and working with teenagers and young adults. Eric sees the therapy room as a place where clients can talk about aspects of themselves and their lives that they don't talk about anywhere else. He believes that by creating space to discuss the events of clients' lives as well as their innermost thoughts, fears, and hopes, he and they can work together to gain insight and develop as people. As a couples and family therapist, Eric coaches clients to speak from their softer emotions and listen to one another with empathy and understanding, without getting defensive. As an individual therapist, Eric helps clients overcome challenges such as anxiety and depression and identify the lives they most want to lead. Eric has received post-graduate certification in child and adolescent therapy from Manhattan's Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center. He has completed advanced training in Narrative Therapy at the Vancouver School of Narrative Therapy and finished levels 1 and 2 in Hypnotherapy training from the Milton Erickson Institute. Eric has done extensive training in Sex Therapy at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, where he also received specialized education in this area. He was formerly the facilitator for the Sex Therapist Clinicians Collective as a fellow at the New York Marriage and Family Therapy Network. Eric studied Relational Life Therapy with Terry Real and has trained in mindfulness techniques at the New York Insight Meditation Center, the Shambhala Chicago Meditation Center, and at the Zen Mountain Monastery.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am open, creative, and non-judgmental. My work is relaxed, but focused. I am gentle in my feedback, but can be quite direct. I have a strong track record of helping couples, families, adult individuals, and teenagers to get a better grasp on what they want from their lives and relationships, and to take steps towards becoming the people they most want to be. I see therapy as a form of play; I collaborate with clients to identify what patterns in their lives and thought are useful and healthy, and which ones aren't. I bring a sense of humor, optimism, and creativity to our work together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I try to let clients lead our sessions, but I try to help frame and gain context for their emotions, thoughts, and experiences. I do try to help clients focus on meaningful and important aspects of their lives. I work with clients to help interpret their thoughts, dreams, fantasies, and life events; I try to do this more by asking the right questions than imposing my thoughts and opinions. I see therapy as a conversation and a collaborative process. When working with couples, we have an initial session in which we talk about the presenting challenges as well as what attracts the partners to one another. I next have individual sessions with each partner, to get a sense of their family, relationship, and mental health histories, as well as how they see their challenges and what they hope to get out of therapy. In our fourth session, we come back together to share whatever insights we came to in our individual sessions. And then we take it from there. As a sex therapist, I take a holistic but more focused approach, as sex therapy clients often want to address challenges with a sense of urgency. With these cases, I try to be both inquisitive and practical so that we're considering the larger context of the client's problems while still working to make progress. As a family therapist, I combine group sessions with individual sessions, so that I can get a sense of the family dynamic by witnessing it firsthand and by hearing about it from the individual family members. I coach clients to communicate with one another from their softer, more vulnerable emotions, and to actively listen, without getting defensive.
