Getting to know Erik Gundel

I’m a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC, LCAT) in NYC, helping creative adults navigate anxiety, depression, self-criticism, and creative blocks. My work blends music, empathy, and relational depth to create a safe, collaborative space for emotional exploration and personal growth. Through guided music-making, songwriting, listening, singing, and recording, we work together to process emotions, strengthen self-awareness, reconnect with creativity, reduce stress, and build confidence. No musical experience is required — all you need is a willingness to explore your thoughts and feelings through sound. I specialize in supporting adults who want to combine emotional growth with creative expression, providing a structured yet flexible approach that adapts to each client’s goals and comfort level. My goal is to help clients feel heard, understood, and empowered, leaving sessions more expressive, centered, and confident.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Music therapy is a collaborative, individualized process. I work with clients to create a supportive environment where they can explore emotions and personal growth through music. Sessions are designed to be nonjudgmental, adaptable, and guided by your goals. Clients often book music therapy for: Anxiety or stress management Depression and low mood Self-criticism and low self-esteem Creative blocks or feeling “stuck” creatively Life transitions and emotional adjustment Desire to reconnect with personal creativity My approach emphasizes empathy, curiosity, and creativity, ensuring you feel safe to experiment and express yourself. No prior musical training is needed — all sessions are tailored to your abilities and comfort. Whether through improvisation, songwriting, listening, singing, or recording, I aim to help you feel understood, supported, and able to access new insights about yourself while strengthening your creative voice.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Each session is tailored to your needs, goals, and comfort level. We explore the methods that best support your emotional and creative growth, often combining verbal reflection with musical experiences. Common approaches include: Improvisation: Spontaneous music-making to access emotions and creative expression quickly. Songwriting: Crafting lyrics and melodies to reflect personal experiences and collaborate with the therapist. Music Listening: Engaging with personally meaningful music to evoke insight, emotional connection, or stress relief. Singing: Vocal expression for emotional exploration and self-expression. Recording: Creating a tangible artifact of your creativity to build self-esteem and track progress. Sessions are collaborative and adaptable. Together, we focus on emotional processing, self-awareness, creative exploration, and building confidence, while keeping music at the center of growth and expression. The process is structured yet flexible, designed to help you reconnect with yourself and your creative voice in a meaningful, supportive way. This is a general structure, but it may change from week to week depending upon the individual, or the progression of our work together.

Erik is extremely attentive and patient. He allows me to address my issues at my own pace which is very important to me. Working with Erik has helped me in so many ways. At a time where I felt completely lost and couldn’t even understand what I was experiencing and feeling, Erik has been integral in helping me find my footing again. Also, this was my first time hearing of music therapy and I’m so glad I took the leap and tried it. I would definitely recommend him.
