About Dr. Gerard Desmond

My name is Gerard “Jerry” Desmond and I am the Executive Director with Recovery Physical Therapy at our Flatiron office in Manhattan. If you are unfamiliar with me as a physical therapy practitioner, I have been in the field for 35 years. I dabbled at making a living as a carpenter, in clerical work, lumberman, stock person, busboy, truck driver, waiter, banker, funeral receptionist, and cutting lawns prior to becoming a physical therapist. I realized physical therapy was my calling while volunteering over a two-year period to take care of a boy who had sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) after a major car accident. During my thirty-four years as a physical therapist, I have had extensive experience in the field of sports rehabilitation with athletes at all levels of competition. I provide a “hands on” approach to treating orthopedics and sports-related injuries on a recreational level, as well as, a professional sports level. I have worked with athletes from the New Jersey Nets, New York Rangers, Alvin Ailey American dancers, professional tennis players, the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Amateur boxers, and baseball athletes. I chose physical therapy as a profession to make an impact on people’s lives and after many years practicing with a BS degree in physical therapy I completed my doctorate in 2012. I also received formal recognition of clinical excellence by the American Physical Therapy Association with specialty certifications in both Orthopedics (OCS) and Sports Medicine (SCS), which is a rarity as not many people in the United States have both certifications. I am recognized as a specialist amongst my peers, physicians, and by the many universities who send us students to teach and develop their clinical skills; a curriculum requirement. Recently, I endeavored to become a first responder and then an EMT volunteer for my community for the past 5 years. I do what I am passionate about, set very high goals, and believe that hard work and commitment lends themselves to great outcomes. At Recovery Physical Therapy, this is our philosophy. I represent you the patient and the referring physician. I always aspire to make a difference in my patient’s lives. This is my passion.
