“I worked with Dr. LaFace for several years and found her to be thoughtful, perceptive, and deeply engaged in her work. She has a way of getting to what matters without making the process feel forced or formulaic. I appreciated that our work was both practical and meaningful—I could bring in what was happening in my life, and we could get to the heart of it. Later, I also worked with one of her associate therapists, Dr. Randi Jackson, she is warm, direct, and very experienced, and I always felt that she was paying close attention to me as an individual rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. I would absolutely recommend her, as well.”

Getting to know Dr. Heather Laface

Dr. Heather LaFace, PhD, is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in California and Clinical Director of movn Embodiment Collective, providing psychotherapy for adolescents, young adults, and adults. She specializes in anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, complex trauma, relationship concerns, life transitions, stress and burnout, grief and loss, disordered eating, psychosis and extreme states, identity concerns, self-esteem, and women's mental health, including perimenopause and menopause. I believe therapy is most effective when it considers the whole person. In addition to evidence-based psychotherapy, I integrate attachment theory, neuroscience, EMDR, psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy, and mindfulness-based and embodied approaches to help clients understand their patterns, strengthen resilience, and create meaningful, lasting change. Many of my clients are successful and driven, yet feel burned out or disconnected from a deeper sense of aliveness and meaning. Together we slow down to understand what's beneath the achievement, and build a life that feels genuinely your own. My goal is to provide a collaborative, compassionate, nonjudgmental space where clients feel understood and supported as they move toward greater wellbeing. (Psychedelic integration support refers to post-experience processing, not substance administration.) Licensed since 2014, Dr. LaFace holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute and has over a decade of experience in private practice, clinical supervision, and teaching. She has specialized training through Stanford's Sleep Health & Insomnia Program and in Attachment-Focused EMDR. At movn Embodiment Collective, Dr. LaFace is not currently accepting new individual clients, but her associate clinicians are welcoming new patients under her clinical supervision.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy with me is a place for building confidence, motivation, and belonging. I work with the whole person in their life context — not just thoughts and behaviors, but the deeper patterns, relationships, and rhythms that shape how you experience yourself and the world around you. If you're exhausted, can't sleep, know you should be taking better care of yourself but can't get started, feel anxious all the time, or just don't feel like yourself lately, you're not alone, and there is real support for that. I draw on depth and Jungian psychology, attachment-focused EMDR, CBT, and embodied, body-based approaches, and I tailor my style session to session because you are the expert on your own life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My first priority is helping clients feel comfortable, understood, and genuinely heard. I believe that meaningful therapy begins with a relationship built on trust, curiosity, and collaboration. From there, we work together to make sense of your experiences—not only your thoughts and emotions, but also your relationships, behaviors, and the patterns that shape your life. Some people come to therapy with a clear understanding of what they want to work on, while others simply know that something doesn't feel right. Both are welcome. One of my strengths is helping people put words to experiences that have been difficult to understand. I offer guidance and perspective when it is helpful while also making room for clients to discover their own insights and meaning. Rather than rushing to quick answers, I help people stay engaged with uncertainty long enough for greater clarity, resilience, and lasting change to emerge. I view therapy as a collaborative process that is tailored to each individual. Sometimes that means offering structure, education, or practical strategies. At other times, it means slowing down, listening deeply, and allowing new perspectives to unfold naturally. My goal is to help each person develop a deeper understanding of themselves while building the confidence and flexibility to navigate life's challenges in ways that feel authentic and sustainable. This is the approach I bring to my own work, and it's the same philosophy that guides my associates at movn Embodiment Collective, who are currently welcoming new clients under my supervision.

I found Dr. Heather LaFace at a point when I truly needed guidance. She’s one of the most intellectually engaged therapists I’ve worked with. She’s genuinely curious, well-read, and brings a depth of thinking that leads to deeper understanding and acceptance of yourself. She’s clearly invested in staying current with therapeutic practice, and she brings that knowledge in ways that feel relevant, not academic for its own sake. She’s also generous with resources, she’ll point you toward a book, an article, a framework, whatever might help, and those recommendations and tools have genuinely shaped how I think, feel and exist.
Heather is an amazing therapist. She is intellectually brilliant as well as intuitive and empathetic. She helped me to totally reframe how I was thinking about some relationships and patterns in my life, and it really changed things for me. In the past I've had therapists who felt like they were friends I was paying for, but Heather challenged me in a way that I've needed, I guess, for a long time.
I have been on a path of healing, personal growth, and mental/emotional health since I was 16. Over that time, I have worked with several competent therapists, but I have NEVER had a therapist with such insight, intelligence, compassion, empathy, and genuine joy and thorough engagement in their work as Heather Laface. I am entering my tenth year with her, and I have yet to reach a level in the work where it feels capped or complete. I continue to find new insights, new discoveries, and new challenges with her. Heather is able to find a balance in her work between allowing the natural path of personal impulse, expression, and instinctual release in her clients while sharing her own thoughts, guidance, and suggestions like no therapist I've ever known. Working with her is the perfect dance of personal discovery and outside guidance. Best of all, she's curious. She is CONSTANTLY researching and studying and working to grow in her own abilities, as well. Heather. Is. The Best!
