Getting to know Dr. Ingmar Gorman

I’m a licensed psychologist with over a decade of clinical experience, specializing in trauma, substance use, anxiety, depression, and psychedelic integration. I earned my PhD in Psychology from The New School and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at New York University. I also hold a bachelor’s degree from New College of Florida. I co-founded Fluence, a psychedelic therapy training company, and have trained thousands of clinicians while serving as site co-principal investigator in FDA clinical trials of MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD. My work bridges cutting-edge research with compassionate, evidence-based psychotherapy. I work best with adults navigating complex emotional landscapes—whether recovering from trauma, exploring the potential of psychedelics, managing addiction, or seeking balance in high-stress careers. Many of my clients are professionals, creatives, or globally mobile individuals facing unique identity and life transitions. My therapeutic approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in trust. I integrate relational, mindfulness-based, and harm reduction practices tailored to each individual. I believe healing unfolds when we’re supported in connecting with our natural capacity for growth. Therapy with me offers a space to reflect, recalibrate, and move toward a more meaningful and satisfying life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My goal is to understand you as a whole person—not just a diagnosis or a set of symptoms. Our work together begins with a conversation about what brings you to therapy and what you're hoping to explore or change. I offer a flexible, personalized approach and prioritize building a strong therapeutic relationship from the start. You don’t need to have all the answers—just a willingness to begin. Clients often describe me as thoughtful, nonjudgmental, and grounded. I balance deep listening with gentle guidance, and aim to support your autonomy while offering clear and informed perspectives when helpful. My approach is trauma-informed and adaptable, drawing from relational psychotherapy, mindfulness, harm reduction, and other evidence-based methods. If you’re navigating a transition, dealing with stress or burnout, exploring a relationship to psychedelics, or simply feeling stuck, I offer a space where growth, clarity, and healing can unfold—at your pace, in your way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is a conversation—not an interview. We’ll explore your reasons for seeking therapy, discuss your goals, and begin to understand your experiences in context. From there, we co-create a path forward that’s responsive to your needs and flexible over time. Most importantly, we'll learn whether we are a good fit, since trust and the therapeutic relationship is a key predictor of change. Sessions are typically 45–55 minutes and take place weekly via telehealth. I bring structure and direction when it’s helpful, but I also leave space for you to discover what’s most important to you in the moment. Some clients come with specific challenges; others use therapy as a reflective space to deepen self-understanding or prepare for meaningful life changes. If you’re interested in psychedelics, I offer preparation and integration support—helping you reflect on your experiences and apply insights in a grounded, therapeutic way. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, navigating a complex relationship, or integrating a powerful journey, I meet you where you are with curiosity, skill, and compassion.

Thanks to Ingmar's help, I was able to understand and resolve a profoundly unsettling and terrifying hallucinogenic experience from decades ago, finally bringing me closure.
Dr Gorman is a sensitive, intelligent, and highly talented clinician. His ability to convey kindness, support, and, perhaps most importantly, flexible creativity in his work with me has been nothing short of life-changing. Good clinicians can be the sounding board for the change you want to make in your life, but great clinicians are those who hold space to allow and guide you to discover and unlock the potential for deep liberation. Dr Gorman is that very special kind of person.
Dr. Gorman was my therapist for three years and supported me through some incredibly challenging times. I credit our work together with helping me navigate those difficulties and guiding me to a place where I feel more at ease with the unknown and thrive in situations that once felt daunting. I've worked with several therapists over the years, and Dr. Gorman has undoubtedly been the most influential.
he really listens, doesn't just notice surface stuff but notices the deeper parts of what you say. He also remembers everything and then helps you connect the dots. Remarkable and talented. Gentle too!!
I have worked with multiple therapists throughout my life, and Ingmar truly stands out in a special way. Yes he is very well-trained, wise, and insightful, but he also possesses qualities that, in my experience, are unparalleled, These qualities include innate and palpable empathy, a warmth that made me feel safe and supported, and a remarkable ability to listen and truly hear me, even when I couldn't hear myself. He instinctively created a nurturing space where I felt recognized and understood, and in this space he was able to guide me onto a path of deep healing for the first time in my therapeutic journey. With all of his qualities combined, what he creates is a solid framework for the process of transformation. I cannot recommend him highly enough!
