What should a new client know about working with you?

When working with clients, my values are: radical kindness and compassion (I'm aiming for you feeling that you have someone ride or die on your side), collaboration, curiosity, openness, honesty, accountability, humor (only when it's playful and honoring of your experience), patience, and empowering. When clients work with me, they typically say the experience is much different than other therapists. I'm dedicated to empowering my clients and helping them learn and master a sustainable way to change their lives. I believe in teaching a person to fish, not giving them one. Another difference clients note is my focus on clarifying values (who and what matters and how you want to be) and helping people effectively act on those values EVERY DAY. One of my clients recently described a few of these things to me and likely says it better than me: 1. Clarifying and Organizing Thoughts and Feelings. "One of your best skills is taking what I'm thinking or saying, condensing it and responding. You mirror back to me what is at the heart of the issue which is very validating. Once we have clarity, you offer concrete ways to affect change." 2. Hope through Evidence-Based Skills. "You give me evidence-based strategies that are pathways to a different life. It's not a therapy where I'm just venting. It's science. It's focused on moving the needle. The way in which you teach skills by offering tools, funny metaphors and analogies helps me engage." 3. Effective Behavioral Science-Based Process. "Your support is layered--validating, skills-based, and confidence-building. ""Even though I had done other therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, the ACT model was more effective for me." "This process of discovering what is underneath my behavior has made me feel in control of my behavior."

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In all sessions, my primary goal would be to provide a space where you feel supported, seen, and heard--where you feel that you are special and you matter. A space where you get to explore, be curious, and dig deep. A place where you learn to trust, protect, and care for yourself. Ultimately, one of my favorite things to do is to help clients learn or relearn the joy of feeling connected to people who genuinely care for us. For most clients, this means that they learn how to ask for what they need and set boundaries in relationships and also learn how to listen and communicate more effectively. Through this process, they share with others the skills they learn and take their relationships to a whole other level. A typical session with me would involve discussing any measures that were completed outside of session and any homework or between-session activities that we agreed on in the last session. With between-session activities, this could be anything from reading or listening to podcast episode, structured journaling, or running one of our experiments. Every session, clients and I work together to design some kind of action to move the ball forward in their lives. It could be practicing a morning routine with HRV practice or urge surfing. It could be practicing a communication technique with a child, partner, colleague, or client. It could be trying something completely new--e.g., asking for the special at a restaurant and going for it no matter what, taking a different route to work, etc.   Although I believe I'm much more fun than a research professor, I used to be one. I regularly collect data on client progress, so that we can see the data. Often, my clients will underestimate their progress, and are always pleasantly surprised to see what they have done based on measures we've been tracking. I also use tools and apps that help people with values clarification and behavior change.
