Getting to know Joanne Mackie

I help people who have experienced painful or abusive childhoods to feel more connected, safe, and grounded in their daily lives so they can build healthy relationships and experience peace without feeling trapped by the automatic and usually unconscious responses they have developed over the years, such as hypervigilance, depression, or disconnection from themselves and the world around them. With a Master's in Forensic Psychology from the City University of New York, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, I bring a deep understanding of trauma and its effects to support my clients on their healing journeys.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a trauma therapist, I use a combination of therapeutic modalities in order to achieve the best emotional regulation and health. Some of those commonly used in my practice are Somatic Experiencing, Sensorimotor, Emotionally Focused Therapy, IFS, Polyvagal, Bilateral Stimulation methods, Brainspotting, and Mindfulness and Grounding practices.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We will start slow—building trust and understanding your body's response to trauma. As you gain insight into why you feel on guard, depressed, or sensitive to circumstances around you, you may begin to experience moments of relief. Using somatic techniques, we will work on calming your nervous system, which has the outcome of experiencing increased peace in your relationships and the possibility of engaging more deeply with others.

Joanne Mackie has been wonderful. My sessions feel like I'm having a regular conversation with realistic advice. I'm glad I started going back to therapy especially with Joanne.

Incredibly compassionate, thoughtful caregiver. Good listener and genuine. It’s a highlight in my otherwise hectic, disjointed day to convene with Joanne and ground myself.

She was wonderful for our first session. I typically do not feel comfortable walking out of a first session with a therapist but I did with Joanne. This gave me hope for the future and I feel confident in comfortable that I will make progress via future sessions with her.
I met with Joanne for the first time yesterday. I’ve only had one other experience with a therapist and I left that office feeling belittled. But Joanne was very welcoming and I felt comfortable in her presence. She has a naturally warm and inviting presence. Her advice comes from a place of love and positivity. When I left her office, I felt so much better!
It was a true pleasure meeting with Joanne Mackie today. I was nervous but that went away as soon as we started to talk. Look forward to my next visit.

I've had a hard time in the past opening up completely to therapists. Because of that I go years without bothering. This time around has been different so far with Joanne. Halfway through our first session I suddenly felt like I didn't have to dance around my main issue. I've forever had self-esteem issues that play out with self-destructive behavior. Shame is at the core of it all. I didn't feel judgement with Joanne, which made me comfortable enough to share my "secret life" with her. She is VERY easy to talk to and has a way of making me feel like I matter.
My visit with Joanne was very pleasant and enjoyable. She made me feel very comfortable and before we knew it, our session time was up. I am definitely looking forward to our sessions in the future and would highly reccommed her.
Joanne Mackie is a real professional who is truly a great listener. Her insights have been invaluable in helping me see things from a different angle. I'd be quick to recommend her to anyone!
I have done a few phone consultations with Ms Mackie. She put me instantly at ease, and I am amazed at the speed and depth of her understanding. She was extremely helpful. I was feeling purposeless after my retirement, and she helped me find motivation and volunteering opportunities which have given me more reason to live and more satisfaction than I have felt in decades. I recommend her to all my friends.
I have been going to therapy for the majority of my life, but Joanne, by far is the best I’ve Seen. Not only is she easy to talk to, but she is relatable and truly gives you the floor to express yourself. I have been dealing with a life long issue that she has shown the light to in a way that is understandable, something that no one has been able to do for me! I am so thankful that I found this practice and I will be seeing her for the long run!
Joanne was punctual and she immediately put me at ease. Her manner is caring and considerate and she worked well with me during the period I needed her help. I felt that I gained a real benefit and improvement in myself from seeing Joanne. I would not hesitate to recommend Joanne Mackie to others!
Joanne is an exceptional doctor. She genuinely cares about her patients and even goes as far as checking in on them outside of scheduled appointment time to see how they're doing. I felt so comfortable opening up to her and even more comfortable and willing to take and implement the advice she gave. She is friendly, down to earth, relatable, warm and allows you to speak your truths. She truly is wonderful and I looked forward to every visit.
