Getting to know Dr. Jonathan Kratter

Dr. Jonathan Kratter is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 40 years of professional experience. He earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology from St. John's University. His areas of specialization include individual and family psychotherapy, with a particular emphasis on the evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents, college students, and young adults. Psychotherapeutic treatment is offered for the following issues or conditions: depression, anxiety disorders, panic disorders, phobias (including school phobia), relationship difficulties, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), excessive anger and mood instability, socialization issues, divorce-related issues, oppositional disorder, low self-esteem, school and behavioral conflicts, and social anxiety. Supportive therapy for college students is also provided. Parent guidance sessions and school consultations are available, including participation in 504 and CSE meetings.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Dr. Kratter's approach involves a great deal of openness, support and feedback. Using less rigid, more informal techniques to establish rapport and engage the client's cooperation and participation, the sessions are often structured to be supportive, engaging, and yet challenging and growth-promoting. Treatment is focused, and geared towards understanding and problem resolution. Cognitive methods (CBT), mindfulness, relaxation and stress reduction techniques are often utilized.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The therapy process is more of an interactional approach, rather than a psychodynamic one. Ego-supportive techniques, as well as cognitive strategies are utilized to help clients feel better, more confident, and better equipped to cope with challenges and difficulties they may be experiencing at home, at school, or in the workplace. Family sessions are often utilized to facilitate improved communication between parents and their children, and also to enhance the relationship among siblings. Remote sessions are offered for adolescents and college-age students who may be away at school. Specialized relaxation and meditation techniques may be offered, as additional tools to reduce anxiety and stress.
