Psychologist
245 5th Ave, New York City, NY
Currently accepting individuals and couples as new clients. You started from the bottom and now you’re here. But there are things about being here that you didn’t anticipate. These things may be causing confusion and distress. There are things that you experienced on your journey to here that still hurt. I’m here to help you heal and thrive despite the confusion, distress, and hurt. I work with high achieving people who are often the first in their families to earn advanced degrees and secure high-paying professional or high-prestige careers. My clients are often the outliers in their families, breaking generational curses, and blazing trails. While these things are laudable and exhilarating, they may also include a lot of pressure, can make you feel lonely, and sometimes includes survivor’s guilt. Just because you’re a high-achiever doesn’t mean that you have escaped trauma, depression, or anxiety. As a Black same-gender-loving male psychologist and the first in my family to become a doctor, I personally understand the unique pressures of being a high-achieving minoritized person. I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology and completed my clinical internship at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center. With over 15 years of experience, I help Black people, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals heal and thrive in their careers, relationships, and within themselves. I use a combination of culturally informed cognitive, emotion-focused, and somatic techniques to help you (1) better understand and effectively communicate your emotions, values, and needs; (2) develop tools to cope with prejudice, discrimination, and oppression in the world and at work; and (3) improve your mental health and relationships.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As people who have often experienced trauma – big and small – from our families and a biased/oppressive society as a whole, we sometimes doubt ourselves, suppress our own emotions, and find ourselves in relationships and situations that continue the harm. Even when we overcome, we can still have difficulty enjoying the rewards from our hard work, navigating new environments with unspoken rules, and healing from past pain. I am here to help you break unhealthy patterns, get connected to your emotions, and cultivate relationships that affirm you. I believe that everyone deserves to not only heal but to also thrive. You are inherently special and connected to something greater than yourself. It just may be the case that the tools and coping strategies you once used are no longer working for you. It’s time to learn something new, figure out a different way of communicating, and embrace a different perspective. Let’s work together to build a healthier relationship with yourself and others.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Combining the strengths of your culture, mindfulness, and cognitive therapy I will guide you on a journey of getting in touch with your emotions and the trauma that lives under your skin. Together, we will process past and recent events, the emotions attached to them, and determine where those emotions live in the body. We will also examine the hidden messages about your emotions that you may have unknowingly internalized. I'll teach you how to challenge, accept, and change emotions – as appropriate – to learn new ways of being. The relationship between a person and their therapist is a unique one. The focus is on you, but you are not alone. With me as your therapist, you will have a partner, an advocate, a co-conspirator, and a protector of the most vulnerable parts of you. Both of us are in this together. My first priority is that you feel seen and heard. Once we create a safe, affirming foundation together, we dig in together to do the work of healing. I will validate you, challenge you, and provide accountability while you heal. I invite you to be an active participant in this partnership. You are the expert on you. I am an expert in mental health. Let’s combine that expertise to reach your goals.
