“First of all, I’m a certified Life and Health Coach. I’m super picky on who I choose to open up to! Secondly, I’ve been in desperate need of a good therapist for the last 3 years since moving to NYC. I came from out west where great therapy is a lot easier to find. After my appointment tonight I feel super calm and more collected with my thoughts! I have hope and faith for the first time in a very long time! And lastly, I highly recommend him to anyone who needs to unpack their trauma or talk their problems out! Jonathan was very easy to talk to. I can’t believe all I opened up already in our session about! I usually have a super big wall up and don’t open up so easily. He is very calm, empathic/compassionate and super professional! If there is a 10 star rating I’d give 11. Thank you! And good luck to all on their healing journey! Blessings ??”

Getting to know Jonathan Richards

Disclaimer: Providers at Canino Psychotherapy focus on therapy services and do not prescribe medication, as they are not psychiatrists. My extensive experience working with vulnerable and underserved populations has given me a uniquely compassionate perspective in my therapeutic approach that I bring to every session. I hold a Master's in Mental Health Counseling from Baruch College, which has further equipped me to support clients effectively. Working together, I'm confident that we can successfully address your struggles with self-image, self-esteem, passive and masking behaviors, boundaries, life satisfaction, obsessive and intrusive thinking, relationships, emotional abuse, and traumatic experiences, among other challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I use a combination of insight and behavioral approaches. A behavioral approach will be more appropriate to help a client to immediately address acute and distressing symptoms that are interfering with their ability to function. Meanwhile, an insight based approach will help a client better understand how their experiences in the past contributed to the development of their current challenges, and work towards increased self awareness and acceptance.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I work with my clients to build a therapeutic space that promotes deep and meaningful exploration of the self. Many of my clients start therapy needing to address significantly distressing situations and experiences, and maladaptive behavioral and thinking patterns. Over time, clients learn skills to address their unique challenges uncover new insights about themselves, their experiences, relationships, environments, and life goals that drive continual personal growth.

Jonathan was knowledgeable, articulate, and warm in his approach. I've had therapists before, and none of them impressed me on a first visit as much as Jonathan

My therapist, Johnathan, has been working with me for over three years now, and I truly value the relationship we’ve built. He’s supportive, insightful, and creates a safe, non judgmental space where I feel heard and understood. His guidance has helped me grow tremendously, both emotionally and mentally, and I genuinely appreciate the consistency and care he brings to our sessions. I feel very fortunate to have him a my therapist.
My partner and I worked with Jonathan during a pivotal time in our relationship. He helped us navigate effective communication styles, develop a better understanding of one another, and equipped us with the necessary tools to better handle conflict resolution within the relationship. Our sessions with Jonathan fostered an environment where we could be open and honest; Jonathan was non-judgmental and very insightful. We would highly recommend him as a therapist!
I’ve been working with Johnathan for a little over two years now, and as cliché as it sounds, he saved my life. He has provided me with the tools needed to manage the daily stressors of life, while addressing the core values that had my esteem so low. He is empathetic, informative and extremely passionate about his craft and I look forward to continue growing and healing under his care!
Johnathan was very helpful and attentive to the needs of me and my partner during our therapy sessions giving keen insight and questions as we navigated therapy leading to an overall more fruitful relationship through breakthroughs. I appreciated that he was on time for sessions and was willing to listen intently to our individual and collective concerns.
I've been with Jonathan for around 2 years. When I came into the sessions I was insecure, self doubting and thinking the world was out to get me. Now I am much more confident in myself and my abilities. My relationships with others is much better. And I'm a much happier person! He is the best therapist I could've had!
