Dr. Kerry Cannity, PhD

Psychologist
150 E 58th St, 21st Fl, New York, NY
When you’re facing something serious, be it an illness, a health scare, overwhelming anxiety, or strain in your relationships, it can feel like the ground has shifted beneath you. You may have always handled things on your own, pushed through, and stayed strong. But sometimes strength looks like asking for support. I work with individuals and couples navigating anxiety, depression, major life transitions, and relationship stress, as well as those working to improve their physical health. I have particular expertise in supporting people coping with cardiovascular conditions, panic related to heart symptoms, cancer, and blood disorders. Health challenges can trigger fear, hypervigilance, and a loss of trust in your body. Together, we work to calm the nervous system, reduce panic, and restore a sense of steadiness and control.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When we begin, my first priority is to listen—to understand what you’ve been carrying and what feels most urgent right now. From there, we build a plan that supports both short-term relief and long-term change. I take an integrative approach that recognizes the deep connection between mental and physical health. Over the past decade, since earning my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tennessee, I have worked across inpatient, outpatient, and integrated medical settings, helping patients navigate complex health and emotional challenges with resilience. You don’t have to manage this alone. Wherever you are right now, we can work toward greater clarity, stability, and confidence together. Outside of my clinical work, I enjoy taking advantage of life in New York, from walks in Central Park to museums, plays, and concerts—reminders of how important it is to make space for joy even during difficult seasons.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach is active, practical, and compassionate. I draw from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and psychodynamic psychotherapy to help you understand what’s happening emotionally and physiologically, while also giving you tools you can use in everyday life. Whether you’re experiencing stress-induced chest tightness, racing thoughts at night, or ongoing medical uncertainty, therapy can help you regain footing.
