Getting to know Dr. Kirsten Lentz

Psychotherapy alleviates suffering and expands your capacity to live a fulfilling life. It helps you build stronger relationships, find satisfaction in work, be more creative, and achieve your goals-whatever they may be. Good psychotherapy works through collaboration; we work together to understand your experiences, memories, and relationships to create openings for change. Suffering takes many forms. I have helped people overcome a variety of difficulties, including depression, anxiety and panic, trauma, grief, life and health crises, eating disorders, body image issues, self-harm, fertility problems, family and relationship conflicts, and compulsive behaviors. I am a warm and relatable person, and I bring that to my work with others. My practice is diverse across race, nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and age. I strongly believe therapists must be sensitive to social issues and bring into treatment an understanding of the suffering and trauma caused by marginalization and discrimination. I have extensive experience working with members of the LGBTQIA+ community. I hold a Master's in Social Work from New York University, a PhD from Brown University, and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois. Additionally, I earned a Certificate in Postdoctoral Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis from New York University, which enriches my approach to therapy and deepens my understanding of the human mind.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am currently seeing patients in person and/or via zoom or other secure platforms. My office is in Soho, one block south of Houston, near many train lines. After making an appointment with me online, please call me for a brief initial phone consultation.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am a graduate of the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. My approach is psychoanalytic, which means that we intensively attend to deep inner life in a way that is both emotionally supportive and also leads to personal insights that promote growth and change. My approach is also highly individualized; I adapt myself to the unique needs of each person. I have extensive experience in the treatment of trauma. I publish on issues of sexuality/gender, give lectures on these topics in academic contexts, and in my practice, I often work with people from the LGBTQIA community. I have more than 15 years of experience in the field.

I have worked through a number of very important and/or difficult moments in life in my work with Kirsten over many years. I trust her and would recommend her highly for her expertise but also for her really caring and empathetic way of working with her patients.
Kirsten is an extraordinary therapist. Working with her has changed me from the inside out. Her tender and deep listening — which I’d never experienced before — has helped me more lovingly listen to myself. What a revelation, to begin to hear, feel and trust my own voice! And then gradually dream a new life into existence. She is exquisitely kind, patient, and insightful — I feel very lucky to have found her.
I worked with Kirsten for many years, and she helped me through some really tough times. She was kind, professional, and patient. I can honestly say I don't think I'd be as happy now if it weren't for her help.

Dr. Lentz is a total lifesaver. She is highly perceptive, incredibly smart, and very empathetic. The last few years have not been an easy time for anyone I know, but her calm, thoughtful approach got me through some really tough times recently. I can not recommend her highly enough.
I have been seeing Kirsten Lentz for almost 9 years. During that time she has been caring, thoughtful, insightful, and dedicated to sustaining my mental health. I have always been comfortable sharing with Kirsten, as she maintains a non-judgmental space. Her true gift is helping to guide you to shift your perspective on thoughts, feelings, and experiences so that you can come to terms with them in a non-threatening way and begin the healing process. She is quite skilled at working through the effects of long-term trauma, having helped me to recognize and defuse triggers. Kirsten is also especially sensitive to queer people, being well attuned to how larger cultural biases impact how we live in this world and how to cope and manage with those oppressive forces. My work with Kirsten has changed my life, made me a stronger person, and helped me to come to terms with the psychological issues that have haunted me throughout my life. I highly recommend her.
