Her doctoral dissertation was entitled “Childhood sexual abuse and its later-life effects.” Dr. Cochran’s pre-doctoral internship at The HELP Group in Sherman Oaks, California, emphasized working with severely emotionally disturbed children in a non-public school setting. She went on to complete her postdoctoral fellowship at The Family Stress Center of the Child and Family Guidance Center in North Hills, California, where her work focused on children and adolescents who have experienced severe physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse. Dr. Cochran continued her work at the Family Stress Center for several years, serving as a supervisor for interns and staff as well as coordinator of the foster care group treatment program and the family therapy program. Dr. Cochran first became interested in traumatized individuals after working for several years on an inpatient hospital stress and depression unit in the early 1990s. She obtained specialized training in trauma-focused CBT and continues to treat traumatized individuals in her private practice. Lara treats individuals and families of all ages. In 2023, she became Chair of the Continuing Education Program at the Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA), where she also serves as an active Board Member.
