Beyond my private practice through Headway, I currently serve as a staff psychologist within the MEDVAMC PTSD Clinic providing evidence-based psychotherapy and assessment for trauma and anxiety disorders to our nation's Veterans. Getting to know Dr. Leslie Taylor

I received my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and completed a post doctoral fellowship in Trauma and Anxiety Disorders at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC). Beyond my private practice through Headway, I currently serve as a staff psychologist within the MEDVAMC PTSD Clinic providing evidence-based psychotherapy and assessment for trauma and anxiety disorders to our nation's Veterans. I am passionate about helping folks recover from trauma, anxiety, and depression. I care very strongly about inclusivity and empowering my clients to be their most authentic selves, even in a world which may minimize their value. I also enjoy working with relationship and family concerns, and can provide couples therapy for appropriate clients.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in my work. I like to incorporate mindfulness and whole health approaches (attending to sleep, hygiene, diet, and exercise) as I respect the mind-body connection, as I understand just how much trauma and anxiety can disrupt our natural rhythm. For clients seeking trauma-focused care specifically, I am a certified provider in the 2025 American Psychological Association Clinical Practice Guidelines' first line treatments for PTSD (Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure Therapy) and trained in other evidence-based therapies for trauma as well (Written Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Couples Therapy for PTSD). I like to modify these approaches to be culturally responsive and individually tailored to my client, as I do not believe in a "cookie cutter" approach to therapy. At the same time, I am a scientist-practitioner and believe strongly that evidence-based treatments are the best mental health care available, and I am committed to offering my clients the most proven and effective care. It is my passion to help individuals regain power over their life and reconnect with their values.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

For our first session, I will schedule a comprehensive intake assessment which will involve me asking questions about your health and wellbeing, trauma (if applicable), and treatment goals. I will use the information to provide you with my clinical impressions and feedback, complete with treatment recommendations. I will only ever recommend treatments that I believe to be helpful to you, considering your phase of life, timing, how intensive the care is, and what your current needs are. My clients tell me how much better and understood they feel even just after the intake appointment. In therapy, clients can expect an equal partnership with me in their mental health journey. They can expect an involved session in which we work together to achieve their unique goals. This often includes take home "practice" to extend the benefits of the therapy beyond the therapy hour. Working with me, clients can also expect to receive evidence-based psychotherapy with a humble clinician who respects that my clients are the experts in their lived experience. After finishing treatment with me, a recent client shared, "I got my life back. I feel more in control and I'm able to handle the hurdles life throws at me." Of note: I am currently unable to assist with disability claims or requests for workplace accommodations.
