Getting to know Mary Comperini

Hi there, I'm Mary! I’m Mary Comperini, Psy.D., ABPP. I earned my Psy.D. from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology and am a licensed clinical psychologist in both California and Wisconsin. I am board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) in Police & Public Safety Psychology. I have a background in forensic and correctional psychology, crisis management, assessment, and community counseling. I believe in a client-centered approach. Most people have the natural ability to overcome life’s challenges, but sometimes we can get stuck or face barriers that prevent us from moving forward. Therapy can provide support, bring fresh perspectives and creative ideas, and help speed up the process of restoring harmony in life. My approach Therapy can sometimes be scary. Trust and the therapeutic alliance are of utmost importance. I create a safe space to explore topics that can be sensitive. I utilize several different modalities, such as cognitive-behavioral, existential, experiential, and emotion-focused therapies, customizing each approach based on individual needs and preferences. We work collaboratively to set goals and outline the steps required to achieve them. We monitor progress by gathering and reviewing data in a non-judgmental manner, modifying goals as needed, and celebrating successes. My focus While I treat a wide variety of people and conditions, my practice primarily focuses on working with “normal” people going through life transitions and/or traumatic events. I specialize in working with correctional employees as well as parents dealing with estrangement from adult children. I treat performance anxiety, depression, and stress. I also specialize in working with people with developmental disabilities and tailor my approach to best meet their needs. My communication style I listen respectfully without judgment and encourage open communication. I provide feedback in a straightforward but empathic manner.
