Getting to know Marylin Perez

Disclaimer: Providers at Canino Psychotherapy focus on therapy services and do not prescribe medication, as they are not psychiatrists. Asking for help can be difficult, as it often involves acknowledging vulnerability, something that can feel uncomfortable or even overwhelming. As a therapist for over 18 years, my goal is to ease that process through a compassionate client-centered approach. I am committed to supporting individuals navigating challenges such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, PTSD, issues related to sexuality, etc. Additionally, I offer services in both English and Spanish to better serve diverse communities.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a therapist, my style is warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic theory, and aspects of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to support clients in understanding their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while fostering meaningful change. My approach is always client-centered, which means sessions are tailored to your individual goals, needs, and comfort level. I believe in building a strong therapeutic relationship as the foundation for growth, and I strive to create a safe and supportive space where you can explore challenges at your own pace.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with getting to know you—your story, your goals, and what brought you to therapy. In our first few sessions, we’ll focus on building rapport, identifying your concerns, and collaborating on a treatment plan tailored to your needs. A typical session involves open conversation guided by your priorities for that day, while I integrate evidence-based techniques from CBT, psychodynamic theory, and DBT as appropriate. We’ll work together to explore patterns, develop coping strategies, and build insight, all within a supportive and nonjudgmental space. Your comfort and progress guide the pace and direction of our work.

Marylin Perez is my hero! Our family calls her "Glinda The Good Witch." She is kind, gentle, professional, WONDERFUL! She treated my son, Peter - a teenager at the time, for two years and he loves her, as do I. His progress continues because of the foundation she built with him. She equipped him with a skill set that he will carry his entire life. I can honestly say, she is the best! Thank you, Marylin. You are our HERO! And, yes, one person can make the world of difference. Marylin is THAT PERSON!
