Getting to know Matthew Singer

I am a psychotherapist with postgraduate training in Internal Family Systems (Level 2), adult psychodynamic psychotherapy at The Training Institute for Mental Health, and child and adolescent relational psychotherapy at The National Institute for the Psychotherapies. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a Master's in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York. My approach to therapy is guided by the firm belief that the strength of the therapist-client relationship is the most important element of successful treatment. I see productive and rewarding work as emanating from a dynamic collaboration between myself and my clients. While my partnership with each individual is unique, my goal is to help every client live a life that is more fulfilling. I have experience working with people across the age spectrum on issues related to anxiety, depression, self-esteem, loss and grief, life transitions, interpersonal conflict, stress management, sexuality and gender, professional and academic/learning challenges, and trauma. Prior to working in mental health, I facilitated countless groups for teens and young adults at Center for Family Life (Brooklyn), assisting people in identifying and honing their strengths, developing professional and interpersonal skills, and effectively addressing conflict. In my practice, I treat adults and couples. I would be happy to provide consultation to discuss my approach and how psychotherapy might work for you. I am licensed to treat clients in the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Colorado.

Great therapist! Really helped me get to the bottom of some important things from my childhood that were holding me back.

Matthew is warm, thoughtful and professional. I was really anxious starting therapy and he helped me to feel at ease. Throughout the process he has respected my pace while encouraging me to take a deeper look at things that have bothered me my whole life. I have learned a lot about myself and I feel much more in control of my life.
When I started therapy with Matthew, I just got dumped by my boyfriend. I felt worthless and I don't think I was even able to see that I had been majorly unhappy in that relationship. Everything was a mess and I wasn't asking myself, "what do I want from a relationship?" Matthew helped me to recognize that I had never been asking myself that question, that it's always been about what other people need first. He helped me to see where that all came from, working with me to connect old relationship stuff to my disappointing romantic life. After some months of looking at what has been stopping me from keeping my best interests as the top priority, I started going out on dates again and always remembering to ask myself "what do I want from this?" I feel much clearer and stronger. Matthew's support has been big part of that.
Matthew was so helpful with my 5 year old boy when my partner and I were going through a separation. Matthew helped me talk to my son about the separation and also did play therapy with him. My kid loved him! Our family would recommend him to anyone looking for help with their children AND adults!
I have worked with a handful of therapists before and Matthew was definitely the first one to really assess me and learn about my history. The intro process made me feel like I was being taken seriously... like NOT just two people in a room chatting (which I seriously think happens alot!) Obviously it also made the therapy process more productive from the get go. Definitely a professional guy who is paying attention.
