Getting to know Dr. Medisa Payvarpour

I believe in connection, growth, and contribution. Maybe that’s why I don’t make certainty and significance my top priorities. And it’s probably why I’ve always known—even from a young age—that I would go into health care. I didn’t know I would become a licensed clinical psychologist, but it’s my life purpose. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from the Wright Institute, and I love to hear my clients’ stories and help them create a full and meaningful life experience. The importance of core values can’t be overstated for a rich, meaningful life. Strong values have always helped me feel stable—no matter the chaos or culture I lived in. They anchor you to what’s truly important. That’s why we’ll discuss your values as we work together. If you focus on what truly matters, those values will serve as a lighthouse, guiding you to safety through the stormiest weather. Like any other person, I’m no stranger to psychological pain. I’ve had my struggles with panic and anxiety, and I’ve also seen my loved ones struggle with dreading life. As we work together, I want you to know that I’ve been on my own journey and climbed many mountains. It would be an honor to help you with your mountains!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Assessment and Understanding: The therapist conducts a comprehensive assessment to gain a deep understanding of the client's experiences with anxiety, depression, and grief. This includes exploring the nature of these emotions, their triggers, and the impact on the client's life. Psychoeducation: The therapist provides the client with psychoeducation about anxiety, depression, and grief, explaining that these are common human experiences. Clients learn that it's okay to have these feelings and that they are not alone in their struggles. Defusion: Clients are introduced to defusion techniques to help them detach from unhelpful thoughts related to anxiety, depression, and grief. They learn how to distance themselves from distressing thoughts and gain perspective. Mindfulness and Present Moment Awareness: Mindfulness practices are integrated to help clients stay present and non-judgmentally observe their emotions, whether it's anxiety, depression, or grief. This mindfulness can help clients manage their emotional reactions and prevent rumination. Values Clarification: Clients identify their core values and what truly matters to them, even in the presence of anxiety, depression, and grief. This process helps clients find motivation and purpose in life. Committed Action: Clients are encouraged to set values-based goals and take committed action despite their emotional struggles. This can involve taking small steps toward improving their mental health and overall well-being. Acceptance: ACT teaches clients to accept their emotional experiences, including anxiety, depression, and grief, without judgment or resistance. Clients learn to be compassionate toward themselves as they navigate these challenging emotions. Self-Compassion: The therapist fosters self-compassion, helping clients develop a kind and understanding relationship with themselves, especially during periods of depression, anxiety, or grief.
