Meghan McDonough, LMFT

Psychotherapist
NY
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in Upstate NY, working with clients statewide through telehealth. I enjoy working with both individuals and couples. I hold a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Syracuse University. My approach varies based on the specific needs of each client, but I see myself as a guide learning alongside you. I always come from a systems perspective, considering outside influences-family, romantic partners, friends, work-and how they interplay and impact you. I am trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy, an evidence-based treatment for trauma that helps clients recover from post-traumatic stress, and I have certified training in grief-informed care. I have worked in diverse settings, including an inpatient psychiatric hospital, a couple and family therapy center, and a community mental health clinic. I especially enjoy working with members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and the diversity of individuals I've encountered helps me relate well to new clients. I like to bring humor into my work and encourage all my clients to be their authentic selves. My style is open and honest, creating space for clients to share things they may never have shared before. This often leads to unexpected moments of vulnerability, including shedding tears. I became a therapist because I enjoy working with people and helping them move toward a better place. I have always been someone others could lean on, and I believe I bring a unique perspective into the room. When setting goals, I focus on what changes you want to make and invite you to imagine what would be different if you had a magic wand. Our first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other through a back-and-forth of listening and clarifying questions.
