Getting to know Melissa Silver

My work as a therapist is primarily to encourage curiosity so that together we can identify what may be happening inside of us that gets in our way or keeps us stuck. Much of the time I am helping people become aware of deeper patterns or relationship dynamics that are difficult to pin down and fix on our own. Therapy is a kind of relationship in and of itself that allows a person ( or a couple) to gain insight so they can create what they truly want. It can open up a vast new sense of freedom from previously constricted thoughts and behaviors as well as a new emotional experience and vocabulary. My lived experience includes almost two decades working in the film and fashion industry in NYC. I am also raising three sons which continues to teach invaluable lessons about how we become our "selves" and how children thrive. I work with parents to help them support the emotional growth of their children from babyhood through adolescence. My work as a therapist is primarily psychodynamic as I believe that early relational attachment is the way we develop a sense of who we are. Often I will work with people to connect what is happening for them in the current moment with family dynamics they grew up in. There is not ever an element of criticism or judgment, only curiosity and awareness. We learn ways to open up to what we are capable of, regardless of our past. I look forward to each new client and couple I meet and believe this work brings renewed hope.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I offer a relational and collaborative approach to getting at the root of why our thoughts, emotions and actions might be preventing us from reaching our full potential. I make sure that my therapy sessions are always a safe non - judgmental space to process sometimes unconscious conflicts or difficult childhood circumstances which can get in the way of living our fullest life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My clients have different backgrounds and needs and I will meet each where they are without judgement. Together, we create a therapeutic relationship in which the bond itself is a part of healing. I tailor the way I work with each client to what they need and what goals they have. I work psychodynamically as it is a way to deepen our understanding of ourselves yet I also give people skills to move through challenges and anxiety that originate in CBT and DBT. I always want to make sure I am creating a plan for the person in front of me as everyone is different.
