Dr. Michael Fenske, PsyD

Psychologist
200 E Del Mar Blvd, # 206, Pasadena, CA
I'm a licensed psychologist specializing in therapy for college students and young adults, as well as older teens and individuals in middle adulthood. I work with clients navigating anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, social and relational challenges, and life transitions. I'm particularly experienced in helping clients who feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of how to move forward. I earned my PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Azusa Pacific University, which has equipped me with a strong foundation in evidence-based practices. My approach is warm, collaborative, and goal-oriented. I aim to create a supportive and nonjudgmental space where clients feel safe exploring their thoughts, emotions, and life experiences. I draw from a range of evidence-based modalities-including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and Humanistic Therapy-to meet each client's unique needs. I currently offer Saturday morning appointments, both in-person in Pasadena and virtually for clients located in California, New York, and Hawai‘i. This flexibility allows me to support students, professionals, and others who may not be able to attend therapy during the traditional workweek.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients often describe me as warm, supportive, and thoughtful. My approach to therapy is collaborative and grounded in respect for each person’s values, experiences, and goals. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach—every client brings their own story, and I tailor our work together accordingly. Therapy with me involves building a strong therapeutic relationship, establishing a sense of hope, and helping clients gain clarity around the issues impacting their well-being. Whether you're seeking relief from anxiety or depression, working through relationship difficulties, or simply need space to reflect, I’m here to offer support that balances insight with practical tools. I strive to help clients feel empowered in the process of change—whether that means learning to manage emotions more effectively, setting healthier boundaries, or rediscovering motivation and direction. Together, we work to understand what’s holding you back and create a path toward feeling more grounded, confident, and connected.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy with me begins with an initial intake session, where I take time to get to know you—your background, what brings you to therapy, and what you hope to achieve. We'll explore your current concerns, relevant life history, and any patterns that may be contributing to your distress. I also use this time to help establish a sense of comfort, clarity, and direction as we begin working together. Ongoing therapy tends to be conversational and collaborative. Sessions often involve exploring the challenges you're facing, gaining insight into patterns or underlying emotions, and drawing connections between past and present experiences. As needed, I incorporate therapeutic interventions and tools that align with your goals and support meaningful change—whether that’s improving emotional regulation, reducing anxious or depressive symptoms, or building healthier relationships. Goal-setting is an important part of my approach. I work with clients to develop clear, meaningful goals that allow us to monitor progress over time. At the same time, I remain flexible and responsive—recognizing that important insights or challenges may emerge during the process that aren’t always reflected in the original goals. Therapy is both structured and adaptive, with space for self-discovery and the kind of growth that unfolds organically. Ultimately, my goal is to help you gain deeper insight, feel more empowered in your daily life, and build lasting tools for emotional and relational well-being.
