Psychologist
WA
I'm a licensed clinical psychologist with a PhD and Master's in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor's degree from Stanford University. I focus on helping people let go of behaviors and thinking patterns that are getting in their way and replacing these with more effective coping strategies. I have years of experience working in a VA addiction clinic, where I specialized in supporting clients experiencing substance use concerns alongside other mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and trauma. My approach is strongly informed by a harm reduction model, and I deeply value client autonomy and collaboration in determining goals that work for you. Every individual client is unique, and I see my role as supporting you in exploring the changes you want to make and developing a plan to reach your goals. Whether you need help changing unhelpful habits, coping with unpleasant emotions or trauma history, or better understanding your own thoughts and behaviors, I look forward to guiding you on the path toward better mental health and well-being.

Getting to know Dr. Michelle Borowitz

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is integrative, utilizing principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI). Every habit and behavior serves a purpose, and one of my jobs is to help you explore and understand the functions these might be serving for you and to use that knowledge to make the changes you want. I place focus on the values and priorities that are important to you, as these help inform your goals and the pathway towards greater life satisfaction.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our initial intake appointment, we’ll discuss your background, current context, and goals for therapy, and start to work out a treatment plan. If you are curious about a possible diagnosis, I will conduct an assessment, asking questions about your experience of specific symptoms to determine if a specific diagnosis fits your experience. Depending on our treatment planning discussions, we may choose to do a time-limited treatment protocol (usually 10-12 sessions), or have therapy be more open-ended. Whether time-limited or open-ended, topics of therapy might include teaching skills to cope with uncomfortable emotions, identifying triggering situations to better understand the source of unhelpful thoughts and behaviors, identifying and problem-solving barriers to change, and/or providing a nonjudgemental space to discuss issues and concerns. Above all, I value a therapeutic relationship based on trust and nonjudgement. I take a collaborative approach in treatment planning, and believe each client is the expert on their own experience. I will guide and provide input and perspective, while honoring your autonomy in the choices you make for your life.
