Getting to know Michelle Grant-Tate

Disclaimer: Providers at Canino Psychotherapy focus on therapy services and do not prescribe medication, as they are not psychiatrists. My practice of psychotherapy begins with the individual and their unique strengths, life experiences, and challenges. I believe that change is always possible, and my job is to guide my clients through the process of self-discovery. I have worked with individuals, couples, families, and groups, using cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and humanistic therapy approaches. Before joining Canino Psychotherapy Practice, I was a psychiatric social worker and case manager for various social work agencies, where I learned to be an empathic listener and a strong advocate for my clients. The client population I served included individuals struggling with mental health issues, addictions, serious medical illnesses, and physical and intellectual disabilities. I have extensive experience working with at-risk older adults and supporting their families and caregivers. I have also helped those with mood disorders, relationship problems, and other challenges of everyday life. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York, which has provided me with a solid foundation to support my clients effectively.

I decided to book an appointment with Michelle as I have been seeking out black therapist. I ran across her profile on zocdoc and I must say the reviews did not disappoint. She’s so welcoming and the energy from the very first call was comforting. I look forward to a lasting rapport and booked my next appt immediately after ending the first. We unpacked so much with the first session, I was surprised how much I talked lol! However she created the safe space for it from the jump. If you’re thinking about booking an appt, go ahead and book. She’s amazing

Michelle is lovely! I scheduled with her based on reviews that she makes you put in the work and helps you move towards real change, something that I am striving for. Right off the bat from our first appointment she was kind, interested and caring (I feel it can be difficult finding this in a therapist sometimes). We were able to touch on my previous history, discuss issues and goals. I so look forward to our future sessions!

Michelle was great to work with, she challenged me gently while guiding me on ways to work through my issues. Would definitely recommend speaking with her if you are looking to identify and break out of behavior patterns.

Michelle was extremely effective in allowing me to work through my issues pertaining to my divorce. Being able to work through what I was feeling and creating a safe judgement free zone helped ease my anxiety in moving forward in my life. She was extremely professional and was able to identify with me, which made for great experience. I would highly recommend.
I have been seeing Michelle for around a month now and she is one of the best therapists I've had! She's very kind and understanding, while also giving homework that helps to improve the patient's life (ie exercising more).
Michelle was observant and helpful in our conversations. She offered insight and perspective that was very useful to me. She also encouraged daily activities to help keep the ball rolling forward.
I have been meeting with Michelle for over almost nine months now. Her patience and understanding have helped me through personal challenges I have been navigating for decades. Her support during moments of crisis and the guidance she offers to equip me in the long term have been invaluable.
I loved my visits with Michelle. She is very understanding caring and kind. Michelle lets me get my thoughts out before speaking. She is helping me through this difficult time in my life and I would recommend her to anyone. If you need a straight shooter therapist she is the one for you.
Michelle was incredibly attentive when it came to listening to my initial reasoning for booking an appointment with her, and her follow-up questions were gentle, guiding, and helped build a well-rounded understanding for the two of us as to why I was with her and what I might need in future sessions. I'm incredibly happy I booked with Michelle and am looking forward to future sessions with her!
I do not normally write reviews, but I felt like this was important, and if my review could give just one person the courage to reach out for guidance/help then it would be well worth it. I have been seeing Michelle for a few months now and was initially very hesitant to seek help. I am not a person who trusts easily and I admit that I am not the most forthcoming when it comes talking about my issues, fears, or feelings. I thought doing sessions virtually would be painfully awkward but Michelle is very patient. She is down to earth and has a way of asking questions and inviting conversation that surprisingly made me feel at ease. She listens and is honest. She challenges me and I have better insight into my issues because of it. Every person's therapy journey is different, but I can say for certain that I see the positive impact that my sessions with Michelle have had on my life, and that I feel accomplished when applying the tools that we have practiced and discussed in our sessions. My family has also noticed a difference, even in this short amount of time. I actually look forward to our sessions, something I never thought would happen. I am so happy that I took that small yet very significant step in reaching out to Michelle for help, and I am so grateful to her for the skills and confidence that our therapy sessions have given me.
Michelle was skilled, compassionate, and professional. She worked with me during my divorce. She provided a safe space for me to process my feelings.
I was searching for an EMDR train therapist for a long time. I’m so grateful to have found Michelle. She’s very skilled, knowledgeable caring and concerned. Dealing with my past trauma has been very difficult but I’m glad that I work with Michelle she makes me feel safe.
I was nervous about starting EMDR treatment, but she made me feel very comfortable. She was extremely patient, kind, professional, and made me feel heard. She was also very informative about the process. I look forward to working with her.
Michelle is very perceptive, empathetic, and helps me in making day to day decisions that I often struggle with. Michelle is also very great at talking about traumatic experiences and helps me find calm and resolution. She has a great tool kit of resources and gives great context to make you critically think about your life experiences. She has great knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion and helps me discuss topics in regard to my race and sexuality.
I've always been a consistently anxious and depressed individual. Although it would be a fallacy for me to say that I'm completely cured from my disorders, I feel confident that Michelle Grant-Tate is leading me to self-improvement. She's always encouraged me to confront and tackle these feelings instead of allowing me to continue a cycle of negativity. She's truly a caring and emphatic individual and I'm grateful to have her as my therapist.
Connecting with Michelle for talk therapy has been a really wonderful experience. Michelle's demeanor is warm, authentic, compassionate, and solution-oriented! I was nervous about needing to vet multiple therapists to find a person that understood me, and had a temperament I found to be inviting, but that process was quick and seamless with Michelle. I would recommend Michelle for anyone who is returning to therapy (like me!) or might be looking to build a therapy relationship with a licensed professional for the very first time.
Michelle has been super helpful during our weekly sessions. From everything to relationships, breakups, friendships, work stress and family. Would highly recommend!
Michelle is a great listener and always very compassionate. She is easy to talk to and makes you feel better. Highly recommend.
Unfortunately cannot work with Michelle any more because of an insurance change, but it was awesome for the months that we had. I would recommend Michelle!
I found Michelle at a boiling point in my life and I started therapy with a lot of personal reservations and assumptions. Michelle is patient, thoughtful, considerate, and attentive, and I am more balanced and kinder to myself for it.
I have been having a great experience seeing Michelle since I started with her two months ago. She has a great natural rapport that puts you at ease and is always free of assumptions or judgements. I know I am early on my journey with her but I always look forward to my next appointment with her and know that I will appreciate the path that I am on with her even more another year from now.

Michelle is a great listener and communicator. This is my first time going to a therapist, and I was very nervous, but she made me feel right at ease. I feel like we've talked about a lot of issues but do wish we would dive more into each topic and stay on one for longer. It also seems we get to the meat of something towards the end of the call and then it is sometimes - not always - brought up again at the beginning of the next. I think I'd like to be challenged more, but understand that's also a bit on me!

Michelle is great at listening, getting to the core of the issue, and providing actionable feedback for me. She has also been accommodating with my schedule.

Very nice lady, but not good at delving deeper into subjects. Always seemed preoccupied with other things going on in her surroundings. She was my first counselor that I've had in 20 years, and unfortunately this experience caused me to not want to pursue further help. I do not recommend her.

The visit was good. Michelle Grant-Tate was a great listener and deveoped an action plan to deal with my issues. She was very professional and attentive.
I really enjoy my sessions with Michelle. I truly feel like my concerns are heard and I always get something out of a session.
Michelle is a highly professional, caring, and talented psychotherapist. She has helped me to understand my struggles with a perspective unique to my world view. I always know she is actively listening and considering the context surrounding my issues. She always considers my perspective and guides me to develop strategies that help tackle life stressors with respect to my process, strengths, and personality. Working with Michelle I've been able to notice more about my choices, empower myself to make positive decisions in my life, and become an active participant in my therapy to reach my goals. She knows how to inspire positive change and I would recommend her to anyone!
