Getting to know Dr. Michelle Stevens

Let's face it, looking for a therapist sucks! At the very moment when you're feeling overwhelmed with anxiety, sadness, grief, heartbreak, depression, career, kids, relationships, or whatever else is causing you trouble, you're supposed to take on the task of finding someone to help? That's messed up! And how do you go about it? Internet searches? Referrals from friends or your insurance company? What are you supposed to be looking for in a therapist? How do you know who to choose? I'm here to help. I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from Saybrook University and my bachelor's degree from New York University. I've been working in the mental health field for decades. In that time, I've helped all kinds of people with all kinds of problems. If you reach out to me, we will have a chat about your needs, and I will do my best to educate you on this confusing thing called the "mental health system." If I think I can personally help you, I'll let you know. If I think I'm not the right fit, I will try to point you in the right direction. Psychology is a huge field. As in medicine, all mental health providers have certain specialties. Any intervention offered, whether it's CBT, EMDR, DBT, etc., should be backed by research that indicates it's the appropriate treatment for the problem it is aiming to address. That being said, research has consistently shown that the #1 contributing factor to successful psychotherapy is the relationship between the client and therapist. Pick someone you like and who you feel likes you back. Therapy should feel safe, welcoming, and validating. Those are the proper conditions for healing and growth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My greatest gift as a therapist is my well-founded optimism. I know that no matter how bad things may currently seem, my clients can overcome obstacles, process pain, and move on to happier, healthier, more purposeful lives. I believe that all people have an innate capacity to grow into their authentic selves; they simply need the right conditions. Think of a plant; no one has to tell a struggling plant how to grow. With the right soil, water, and sun any plant can flourish. It's the same with people. In order to thrive, people just need a genuine, positive relationship with someone who can empathize. As a therapist, it is my honor to provide a healthy and healing environment in which you can grow. I am a client-centered therapist who utilizes research-based treatments. I pride myself on offering clients an experience that is validating, accepting, nurturing, and supportive.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Soon after you book an appointment with me, I will reach out to briefly discuss the reason you are seeking the appointment (to make sure I'm qualified to help). I will then send you an email inviting you to e-sign a few brief consent forms. During our first appointment, we will work together to define your goals and make a plan to get you there.

OMG, I feel so lucky to have found Dr. Stevens! I feel like she's totally changing my life! In the past, I've been to therapists a few times but no one really stuck out. Dr. Stevens is AMAZING! My bf and I got in a fight and I was really upset. Dr. Stevens understood and moved her schedule around so I could see her the SAME DAY. The fight was so fresh that I was kind of inarticulate at our first appointment. But I swear to God, she's a MIND READER. She's not the typical "uh-huh," nod a few times type of therapist. She listens, but then interacts, asks questions, makes you think. I've learned more about myself, my relationship and really people in general in a few weeks than I ever thought possible. I feel like my anxiety is way down and my mood is way up. I am really, really greatful to her. Thanks, doc!
I decided to seek treatment for issues I was having with anger and being very easily triggered. Dr Stevens worked with me to help understand that I need to more skillfully control the expressions of my feelings, and to allow me to feel heard before I got upset. We are continuing to work on how to achieve these goals, but I am very pleased with our progress so far. Dr. Stevens has a great deal of patience, and her style is very kind and accepting and she offers suggestions that are very helpful. I would say that she has been very helpful, and I would recommend her to anyone who is considering getting help.
Dr. Stevens is the best there is and I'm so grateful I found her. She very quickly helped me get to the root of some issues and brought immediate relief and clarity. She is empathetic and caring with a great sense of humor. We took a very practical approach that has made my life much better!
I cannot recommend Michelle more highly. She is truly a find. I'd been to several therapists and could never find anyone who did much more than just listen. Or at least pretend to listen. That's not what Michelle does at all. She engages you directly and insightfully. Michelle not only understands what I'm going through (and often what I'm about to go through!), she suggests what I should do about it. As a film professional, I find her understanding of what we go through in the entertainment business particularly helpful. When I came to her I was stuck in a bad job with a worse boss. She helped me find the confidence to overcome my self doubts and strike out on my own in the industry. She has truly been a Godsend!
