Getting to know Pei-Wen (Sunny) Liao

* WE DO NOT PROVIDE MEDICATION MANAGMENT As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC-D), I provide a warm, supportive, and collaborative environment where children, teens, and adults can explore their emotions, relationships, and life experiences. My goal is to help each individual feel understood, empowered, and equipped to create meaningful changes in their lives. Having immigrated to New York City myself, I bring both professional expertise and personal insight to my work. I understand how life transitions, family dynamics, and cultural expectations can shape who we are and how we cope. Being fluent in Mandarin, I welcome clients from all backgrounds who are looking for a therapist who listens deeply and values each person's unique story. I support clients dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, adjustment challenges, family and relationship conflicts, parenting issues, and life transitions. My approach is integrative and flexible, drawing from psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and child-centered play therapy. This allows me to tailor treatment to each client’s individual needs, goals, and cultural context. I believe that therapy is a journey of self-discovery and growth. Together, we can strengthen your emotional resilience, improve communication, and build healthier relationships—with yourself and with others. Whether you are navigating significant life changes or seeking greater balance and clarity, I am here to support you every step of the way.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you begin therapy with me, I want you to know that our work will be guided by respect, curiosity, and collaboration. You are the expert of your own life, and I am here to support—not judge—your experiences and choices. I welcome all emotions, questions, and uncertainties you may bring, and we will move at a pace that feels safe and appropriate for you. I value cultural sensitivity and understand that identity, family values, and life experiences shape how we cope and communicate. Whether you are navigating personal distress, family challenges, or cultural transitions, I strive to ensure that therapy is a space where your voice matters and your story is honored. You do not need to have everything figured out before coming to therapy. Simply showing up is a meaningful first step. Above all, I aim to create a safe, empathetic, and nonjudgmental environment where each individual feels seen, heard, and supported in their journey toward healing and growth.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During our initial sessions, I will take the time to understand your concerns, background, strengths, and therapeutic goals. Together, we will explore what brings you to therapy and identify what you hope to change, heal, or develop. This may include discussing patterns in your relationships, responses to stress, or emotional triggers. Once we establish your goals, I will tailor our sessions using a blend of therapeutic approaches. This may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for managing thoughts and behaviors, psychodynamic exploration for deeper insights, and play-based or expressive methods for children and adolescents. Depending on your needs, I may introduce practical coping strategies, reflection exercises, or communication tools. Throughout our work, therapy will remain a collaborative process. I will regularly check in on your progress, adjust our focus as needed, and encourage open feedback. My aim is to empower you to apply the skills and insights you gain beyond the therapy room and into your everyday life.
